International Current Affairs
  • Today (29th May 2018) is International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
    • The day was established to :
    • Honour the memory of the UN peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace;
    • Pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in UN peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage.
    • Theme of International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2018 :  “UN Peacekeepers: 70 Years of Service and Sacrifice
  • New Zealand's Edmund Hillary and Nepal's Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest on this day (29th May) in the year 1953, becoming the first people to stand atop the world's highest mountain
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today embarks on a 5 day visit to Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore
    • Aim of this visit : To consolidate India’s ties with three important strategic partners in the Southeast Asia region with key agreements expected in the areas of defence and space.
    • Important Note : This is Modi's 1st visit to Indonesia as Prime Minister. 
  • Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs Javad Zarif is on 1 day visit to India. 
    • Today he met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi and held talks.
    • The two Ministers held discussions on latest developments in bilateral issues. 
National Current Affairs
  • Delhi Metro's Magenta Line from Janakpuri West to Noida's Botanical Garden became fully operational today after CM Arvind Kejriwal flagged off the 24.8-km Kalkaji Mandir-Janakpuri West section. 
    • The line will provide metro connectivity to IGI airport's domestic terminal and will reduce the travel time between Noida and Gurugram from nearly 1.5 hours to 50 minutes.
  • To protect elephants from Tura in Garo Hills of Meghalaya, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) rolled out an awareness campaign titled ‘Gaj Yatra’.
    • Under Gaj Yatra campaign, an elephant mascot will be taken across districts frequented by jumbo herds for generating awareness among the people.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • In collaboration with State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Yoga guru Ramdev's Patanjali launched 'Swadeshi Samriddhi' SIM cards.
    • The SIM, which is currently available only to Patanjali employees, offers ₹2.5-lakh health insurance and ₹5-lakh life insurance alongside data and voice calling benefits. 
  • The Finance Ministry today clarified that renting or leasing of land by farmers for agriculture, forestry, fishing or animal husbandry is exempt from Goods and Services Tax (GST)
  • Tto press for higher wage revision, the union of bank employees has called for 2-day nationwide bank strike on 30th and 31st May 2018. 
    • Around 1 million bank officers are expected to participate in the strike.
    • Various state-run banks across India will be affected with this strike.
Deaths
  • French billionaire industrialist and the Chairman of aerospace giant Dassault Group, Serge Dassault (93),  passed away. 
    • Dassault was the fourth richest person in France with a net worth of $26 billion, according to Forbes.
New Appointments
  • Former Supreme Court Judge Justice R K Agrawal has been appointed as the President of National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC)
    • He has replaced Justice D K Jain, who recently completed his term.
Awards & Honors
  • CEAT Cricket Ratings awards 2018 Winners
    • India skipper Virat Kohli won the International Cricketer of the Year Award.
    • India opener Shikhar Dhawan was presented the International Batsman of the Year Award.
    • New Zealand pace sensation Trent Boult won the International Bowler of the Year Award.
    • Afghanistan's leg-spinner Rashid Khan was presented with the T20 Bowler of the Year Award.
    • New Zealand's opening batsman Colin Munro won the T20 Batsman of the Year Award.
    • Indian cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur has won the Outstanding Innings of the Year Award.
