International Current Affairs
  • Nepal is going to host the 5th BIMSTEC Summit 2018.
    • It was announced by Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli during his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kathmandu (capital city ).
    • About BIMSTEC :
    • BIMSTEC - Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation 
    • BIMSTEC is an international organisation of seven nations of South Asia and South East Asia.
    • BIMSTEC was established on 6 June 1997 through the Bangkok Declaration. 
    • It is headquartered in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
    • South Asian Countries : India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka 
    • South East Asian Countries Myanmar, Thailand
  • Army chief General Bipin Rawat is on 4-day visit to Sri Lanka.
    • Aim of this visit : To take forward the military cooperation between the two countries to the "next level". 
    • Note : This is General Rawat's maiden visit to the island nation as the Army Chief .
National Current Affairs
  • The Union Environment Ministry launched its full fledged Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP).
    • Aim of GSDP : To train over 5.5 lakh workers in environment and forest sectors in the country through 30 courses by 2021.
    • Environment minister Harsh Vardhan also unveiled a related mobile app (GSDP-ENVIS), terming it an ambitious programme of the ministry that will help boost employability and entrepreneurship of the youth in the country.
  • Indian Customs and Department of India Posts held a 1st ever Joint Conference at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi to deliberate on streamlining of​ imports and exports by post. 
    • Commissioners of Customs from all the States having Foreign Post Offices (FPOs) were present along with their counterpart Post Master Generals.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Department of Telecommunications today approved the merger of Telenor (India) Communications Pvt Ltd with Bharti Airtel Ltd.
    • The deal, which was announced in February 2017, has already been approved by the National Company Law Tribunal, the Competition Commission of India, the Securities and Exchange Board of India, and the stock exchanges.
  • The Finance Ministry has announced it cleared three Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) proposals worth Rs. 3,250 crore in April 2018.
    • The proposals included that of Hindustan Infralog Pvt. Ltd. which sought approval for foreign investment from DP World Global Investment BV, Netherlands. 
    • The proposal of Hindustan Infralog Pvt. Ltd. will bring in FDI of Rs. 3,250 crore, the Ministry said in a statement.
    • The other two proposals will not result in any FDI.
  • According to recently released report ‘RemitSCOPE – Remittance markets and opportunities – Asia and the Pacific’, India was largest remittance receiving country in the world with US $69 billion in 2017. 
    • Top five remittance receiving countries in 2017 :
      • India ($69 billion)
      • China ($64 billion) 
      • Philippines ($33 billion)
      • Pakistan ($20 billion)
      • Vietnam ($14 billion).
  • Union Government is going to link additional 200 wholesale mandis to online trading platform eNAM (electronic National Agriculture Market) this fiscal (2018-19) and also encourage inter-mandi transactions. 
    • At present, 585 regulated mandis in 14 states are linked with the eNAM.
    • So far, 73.50 lakh farmers, 53,163 commission agents and over 1 lakh traders are registered on it from these 14 states. 
    • About eNAM :
    • eNAM is pan-India electronic trading portal for farm produce which aims creates unified national market for agricultural commodities by integrating existing Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) markets.
    • It provides single window service for all APMC related services and information, such as commodity arrivals and prices, provision for responding to trade offers, buy and sell trade offers, among other services. 
  • The Indian Army has finalised Rs. 15,000-crore indigenous ammunition project under which range of ammunition for its critical weapons and tanks will be produced indigenously. 
    • It is claimed to be biggest ever initiative for indigenisation of ammunition
    • It aims to overcome long delays in imports and address problem of dwindling stockpile.
Deaths
  • Former Delhi cricketer Rajinder Pal (80), who had represented the country in one Test match, passed away.
  • Noted Hindi film lyricist, Nandram Das Bairagi (87), popularly known as Balkavi Bairagi, passed away.
    • Bairagi, a Lok Sabha member between 1984 and 1989 and also a former Rajya Sabha MP, was 87.
    • He wrote several Hindi poems, among which, "Jhar gaye paat, bisar gayi tehni" is considered a gem by many Hindi poets.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian Judokas won 3 medals on the opening day of Asian Cadet Judo Championships in Lebanon. 
    • Rohini S Mohite (Maharashtra) won a gold medal in the 40kg category while Tababi Devi Thanjam of Manipur emerged as a champion in the 44kg category.
  • The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has decided to implement a strict 'No-Needle' policy at all the national camps and training centres in the country.
    • The policy has come into effect immediately after it was declared.
