Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Broken Houses: on the state of Parliament"
  • Democracy - the belief in freedom and equality between people, or a system of government based on this belief
  • Adjourn - to temporarily end something such as a meeting or a trial
  • Sine die - without arranging a date for another meeting or court hearing
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Afflict - if a problem or illness afflicts a person or thing, they suffer from it
  • Treasury - the government department responsible for a country’s financial matters

  • Forge - to develop a successful relationship
  • Via media - a middle way
  • Productivity - the rate at which a person, company, or country does useful work
  • Amendment - a change made to a law or agreement
  • Appropriation - money that must be used in a particular way, according to an official decision
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Whatsoever - used for emphasizing a negative statement
  • Orally - spoken but not written
  • Supplementary - additional
  • Glaringly - used to say that something bad is very obvious
  • Unruly - very difficult to control
  • Expedient - used for describing an action that produces an immediate result or solution to a problem, even though it may not be fair or honest
  • Eventually - at the end of a process or period of time in which many things happen
  • Effete - not strong or brave, or weak in moral character
  • Answerable - if you are answerable for something, you are considered to be responsible for it
  • Mustering - to try to produce as much of a feeling such as enthusiasm or determination as you can
  • Dock - to take money out of someone’s salary, especially as a punishment
  • Moot - to suggest something as a subject for discussion
  • Hold somebody to ransom - to force someone to do something by putting that person in a situation where they have no choice
  • Unabashed - not ashamed or embarrassed

  • Disarray - a situation in which people are very confused or things are not organized, especially because something unexpected has happened
  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now

  • Behind bars - in prison (jail)
  • Arguably - used for stating your opinion or belief, especially when you think other people may disagree
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Convict - proved to be guilty of a crime by a court of law
  • Quid pro quo - something that you offer or give to someone in return for something that they have offered or given you
  • Testimony - a formal statement about something that you saw, know, or experienced, usually given in a court of law
  • Plea bargain - a process by which someone may be allowed to avoid punishment for a serious crime if they admit they have committed a less serious crime
  • Elite - a small group of people who have a lot of advantages and keep the most power and influence
  • Repudiate - to say formally that something is not true
  • Impunity - freedom from any risk of being punished for doing something wrong or bad
  • Apparently - based only on what you have heard, not on what you are certain is true
  • Polarise - to form two very different groups, opinions, or situations that are completely opposite to each other, or to cause this to happen
  • Heighten - if something heightens a feeling or emotion, or if a feeling or emotion heightens, it becomes stronger
  • Crisis - a time of great disagreement, confusion, or suffering
  • Fraught - very worried and with a lot of problems
