International Current Affairs
  • Today (28th April) is Workers' Memorial Day / World Day for Safety and Health at Work.
    • This is an international day of remembrance and action for workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell by their work.
    • Theme of Workers' Memorial Day 2018 : "Unionised workplaces are safer workplaces"
  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held delegation-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Wuhan. 
    • Both leaders discussed the importance of peace at the border and building trust between the militaries of the two nations
    • Modi told Chinese President that the two countries have a big opportunity to work together for the benefit of their people and the world.
    • Modi also offered to hold the next informal summit in India in 2019.
    • Important Note : The Wuhan summit is being seen as an effort by India and China to rebuild trust and improve ties that were hit by the 73-day-long Doklam standoff last year (2017).
National Current Affairs
  • The Dalmia Bharat Group has adopted Delhi's Red Fort for 5 years.
    • With this, Dalmia Bharat Group has became the 1st-ever corporate company to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the government's "Adopt a Heritage" project. 
  • The Asia Pacific Regional Workshop of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), was recently held at New Delhi. 
    • The four day workshop was jointly hosted by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and UNCCD.  
    • It was attended by delegates from about 40 Asia Pacific countries, as well as representatives from 12 Indian states affected by land degradation, researchers and scientists from scientific institutions of national importance.
    • Aim of this workshop : Building capacity of Asia-Pacific Region to monitor and report on land degradation.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) arm India Index Services & Products Ltd (IISL) has launched Nifty equity savings index which will serve as benchmark for equity saving funds offered by various mutual funds. 
    • The index will capture performance of portfolio having exposure to equity, equity arbitrage and debt instruments in similar way to the investment philosophy of equity savings funds.
  • Global credit rating agency Fitch has kept India’s sovereign rating unchanged at ‘BBB-‘ with stable outlook.
    • According to Fitch, BBB- rating balances India’s medium-term growth outlook and favourable external balances with weak fiscal finances and some lagging structural factors, including governance standards and still-difficult but improving business environment.
Science & Technology
  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), Defence Ministry’s highest decision-making body on procurement, chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman cleared capital acquisition proposals of DRDO’s NAG missile system (NAMIS) for Indian Army and 127 mm calibre guns for Indian Navy. 
    • About NAG missile system (NAMIS)
      • Procured for : Indian Army
      • Cost : Rs. 524 crore
      • Developed by : Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)
      • Strike range : 2.5km with fire and forget capabilitie
    • About 127 mm calibre guns
      • Procured for : Indian Navy
      • Total guns : 13 
      • Cost : Rs 3,000 crore
  • The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has launched a $12 million Grand Challenge to encourage people to create a vaccine that could protect against all strains of flu
    • The Challenge has been launched in collaboration with the family of Google Co-founder Larry Page.
  • Google Arts & Culture in partnership with Ministry of Tourism has unveiled 360-degree virtual reality (VR) video for global ‘Incredible India’ tourism campaign
    • As part of it, Google Arts & Culture will provide users with immersive 360-degree view of India’s heritage, festivity, spirituality and adventure.
New Appointments
  • United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today announced the appointment of Christine Schraner Burgener of Switzerland as his new Special Envoy on Myanmar.
    • Until this appointment, Ms. Burgener was the Ambassador of Switzerland to Germany since 2015.
Awards & Honors
  • Gujarati language poet, playwright, translator and academic, Sitanshu Yashaschandra was selected for 27th Saraswati Samman 2017 for his poetry collection titled “Vakhar” published in 2009. 
  • The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) was awarded National Intellectual Property (IP) Award 2018 in category “Top R&D Institution/Organization for Patents and Commercialization”.
Sports Current Affairs
  • As a part of Saudi General Sports Authority's new 10-year partnership with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), Saudi Arabia hosted its 1st ever WWE event in which women and children were allowed as spectators. 
    • The event, called the 'Greatest Royal Rumble', featured a John Cena-Triple H fight and a 50-man fight including the likes of Randy Orton and The Great Khali.
  • Neeraj Chopra, the first-ever Indian to win javelin throw gold at the CWG, has been recommended for Khel Ratna Award, India's highest sporting honour, by the Athletics Federation of India. 
  • Tennis Player Siddhant Banthia won the Indian leg of the junior French Open wild card tournament in New Delhi
