Meet the winner of Saraswati Samman 2017 - Sitanshu Yashaschandra

Gujarati language poet, playwright, translator and academic, Sitanshu Yashaschandra is going to be honored with this year's Saraswati Samman Award 2017 for his poetry collection "Vakhar".

The selection for the award is made by a high level 'Chayan Parishad' (selection committee), presided over by former secretary general of Lok Sabha, Subhash C Kashyap.

"In the 'chayan parishad' meeting, books were discussed thoroughly and 'Vakhar' (poetry) by Shri Sitanshu Yashaschandra has been selected for Saraswati Samman, 2017. This book was published in 2009," the foundation announced.

About Sitanshu Yashaschandra

  • Born in 1941 in Bhuj, Yashaschandra is one of the most eminent representatives of contemporary Gujarati literature.
  • Odysseus nu Halesu (1974), Jatayu (1986) and Vakhar (2008) are his collections of poetry.
  • He received Sahitya Akademi Award for Gujarati writer in 1987 for his poetry collection Jatayu.
  • He also received Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak, the highest award in Gujarati literature, in 1987.
  • He was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, in 2006.
  • He is currently working as the President of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad.

About Saraswati Samman

  • Saraswati Samman, the highest literary award in India, is an annual award for outstanding prose or poetry literary works of Indian writers.
  • The Saraswati Samman was instituted in 1991 by the K. K. Birla Foundation.
  • It consists of Rs 15 lakh, a citation and a plaque.
  • Last year, Konkani writer Mahabaleshwar Sail was honored with this award for his novel 'Hawthan'.
