  • Swaziland's King Mswati III has changed the name of the country to the 'Kingdom of eSwatini'. 
    • The monarch made the announcement at the dual celebration to mark his 50th birthday and the African nation's 50 years of independence. 
    • Important Note : President of India Ram Nath Kovind has visited Swaziland earlier this month during his three African nation visit (Equatorial Guinea, Swaziland and Zambia).

  • Syria's Foreign Ministry has returned the Legion of Honor award of President Bashar al-Assad which was given by France in the year 2001, saying he would not wear the honour of a country that was "slave" to the US. 
    • This comes after France, the US, and the UK launched coordinated air strikes in Syria.
  • In a bid to tackle marine pollution, the UK is going to ban the sale of plastic straws, drink stirrers and plastic-stemmed cotton buds
  • The 25th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018 (CHOGM 2018) was held in London, United Kingdom. 
    • This is the 1st CHOGM held following United Kingdom’s decision to withdraw from European Union. 
    • Theme of CHOGM 2018 : "Towards a Common Future".
National Current Affairs
  • Delhi has become the 1st Indian city to approve a policy directing power distribution companies to provide ₹50 to residents for the second hour of an unscheduled power cut and ₹100 for every subsequent hour. 
    • Residents will have to register a "no current" complaint with the electricity provider, following which the compensation will be adjusted against the bill amount.
  • Gujarat High Court today acquitted former BJP minister Maya Kodnani, the key accused in the Naroda Patiya case during the 2002 Gujarat riots. 
    • In 2012, Maya Kodnani, a gynaecologist, was sentenced to jail for her role in the riots in Naroda Patiya, a suburb of Ahmedabad where 97 Muslims were killed in the single bloodiest episode of the three-day violence that followed the Godhra train burning of February 27 2002, in which 59 Hindu volunteers were killed.
  • The Group of Ministers (GoM) constituted by Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed One Nation One Tax policy for seamless movement of commercial vehicles across the country. 
    • The GoM is headed by Yoonus Khan (Rajasthan transport minister).

  • US President Donald Trump's nominee James Bridenstine was confirmed as 13th Administrator of NASA
    • He is going to  replace Robert M. Lightfoot, Jr.
    • The 42-year-old former Navy pilot would be the first NASA chief with a non-scientific background.

  • Online discussions platform Reddit has appointed Jen Wong, a former executive at Time as its Chief Operating Officer (COO)

  • According to a recently released World Bank report, India has 19 crore adults without a bank account, making it the world's second-largest unbanked population after China.
  • The British government today announced a new India-UK trade partnership wherein India will invest over ₹9,000 crore in the country.
    • India's investment will help create or safeguard nearly 6,000 British jobs.
  • The German city of Trier, the hometown of Karl Marx, is selling souvenirs of '0-euro' notes bearing Marx's face to celebrate his 200th birth anniversary (5th May 2018). 
Science & Technology
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), a new planet-hunting spacecraft onboard of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Carnival, Florida, US. 
    • TESS mission is designed to carry out first spaceborne all-sky transiting exoplanet survey.
Awards & Honors
  • Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani was ranked 24 in Fortune's 2018 list of The World's 50 Greatest Leaders.
    • Other Indians included were human rights lawyer Indira Jaising (rank 20) and Pritzker Prize-winning architect Balkrishna Doshi (rank 43).
  • US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have featured on TIME magazine's annual list of 100 Most Influential People
    • Other world leaders on the list include Chinese President Xi Jinping and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
    • Whistleblower Christopher Wylie, who exposed the Facebook data scandal is also featured in the list. 
  • A village in Pakistan's Rawalpindi has been named after Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to help India prepare the country's medal hopefuls for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games "to tap into its great potential".
  • The Law Commission of India (LCI) has recommended to declare Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as a public body
    • It also recommended BCCI and its all member cricket associations to be brought under Right to Information (RTI) law regime.
