  • The 25th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018, also known as CHOGM 2018 is to begin in London tomorrow.
    • The CHOGM is a biennial (held for every 2 years) summit meeting of the heads of government of the Commonwealth of Nations.
    • Every two years the meeting is held in a different member state and is chaired by that nation's respective Prime Minister or President who becomes the Commonwealth Chair-in-Office until the next meeting.
    • Important Points to Note about CHOGM 2018 :
      • Host Country : United Kingdom
      • Starting Date : 19th April 2018
      • Ending Date : 20th April 2018
      • Chair : Theresa May (PM of UK)
      • India is being represented by : Narendra Modi (PM of India)
      • Next meeting will be held on : 2020
  • To improve road safety worldwide, the United Nations has launched UN Road Safety Trust Fund
    • The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will act as the secretariat for the trust fund.
    • Aim of this Fund : To accelerate progress in improving global road safety by bridging gaps in mobilization of resources for effective action at all levels.
National Current Affairs
  • Himachal Pradesh is celebrating 71st Himachal Day today.
    • The hill stat came into existence on this day after the merger 30 odd princely states in the year 1948.
    • About Himachal Pradesh :
      • Total Districts : 12
      • Capitals : Shimla, Dharmashala (2nd Capital in WInter)
      • Chief Minister : Jai Ram Thakur
      • Governor : Acharya Dev Vrat

  • The Sabarmati station of India's 1st bullet train, which will connect Ahmedabad and Mumbai, will be themed around Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March.
    • The station will also have a 3-level parking structure with separate provisions for cars, autos, and buses. 
    • The roof-top solar panels will be modelled around a revolving chakra.
  • Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises has announced that it has extended Phase-1 of FAME India Scheme to provide financial support to electric and hybrid vehicles by another 6 months (till 30 September 2018) or till launch of phase-II. 
    • FAME India : Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles India
    • Note : This scheme was launched in the year 2015 under National Electric Mobility Mission (NEMM)
    • Aim of FAME India Scheme : To promote eco-friendly vehicles in the country. 
  • The 2nd edition of India Mobile Congress (IMC-2018) will be held in New Delhi during 25th to 27th October 2018. 
    • The congress will be jointly organized by Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).
    • Aim of India Mobile Congress : To provide platform for policy makers, industry and regulators to engage in meaningful deliberations to drive the future direction of telecom sector. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Martin Sorrell, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the world's largest advertising group WPP, resigned today after 33 years.
    • Sorrell built WPP into one of the UK's largest companies with over 2 lakh employees in 112 countries.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that India’s forex (foreign exchange) reserves have touched record high of $424.864 billion in April 2018. 
    • The surge was due to massive spike in foreign currency assets (FCAs), a key component of the reserves. 
    • Note : The forex reserve had crossed $400-billion mark for the first time in September 2017, but has since been fluctuating.

  • Bollywood Actress Kriti Sanon will be receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award for her performance in the 2017 film 'Bareilly Ki Barfi'. 
    • Ranvir Singh will receive the  Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award for his contribution as Actor for Padmavat.
    • Anushka Sharma will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award for her contribution to films as a producer.
  • Founder of the Microsoft Corporation Bill Gates has emerged as the world's most admired man in UK-based research firm YouGov's survey. 
    • Hollywood Actress Angelina Jolie has been named the World's most admired woman.
    • Note : Prime Minister Narendra Modi was named world's eighth most admired man according to this survey.
Science & Technology
  • Elon Musk-led SpaceX is going to launch NASA's space telescope titled TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) to search for other planets orbiting distant stars. 
    • NASA's TESS will monitor 200,000 of the nearest stars using the same method that enabled Kepler's spacecraft to spot 2,600 confirmed exoplanets. 
    • It is scheduled to launch on April 16 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The 21st Commonwealth Games 2018 concluded today. 
    • Host country australia topped the medal tally with 198 medals including 80 Gold, 59 Silver and 59 bronze medals. 
    • England stood at the 2nd spot with 136 medals (45 Gold, 45 Silver and 46 Bronze).
    • With an overall tally of 66 Medals including 26 Gold, 20 Silver and 20 Bronze Medals India stood at the 3rd place. 
    • India was the best nation in 5 disciplines (Weightlifting, Shooting, Westling, Badminton and Table Tennis), and the second best nation in boxing.
    • Over the 11-day course, Indian athletes set 11 CWG records cumulatively.
    • Boxer MC Mary Kom, who claimed her maiden Commonwealth gold on Saturday, is set to be India's flag-bearer at the 2018 Commonwealth Games' closing ceremony.
