International Current Affairs
- Today (12th April) is the International Day of Human Space Flight / Cosmonautics Day / International Day of Aviation and Cosmonautics.
- This day is observed to commemorate the date of the first human space flight in the history of mankind.
- On this day in 1961, Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet Union (USSR) cosmonaut undertook first successful first human space flight.
- Cosmonaut meaning = an astronaut (= a person who travels into space) from Russia
- India ranked 130th in the Economic Freedom Index 2018 (last year's rank 143).
- The 16th International Energy Forum (IEF) Ministerial Meeting concluded today in New Delhi.
- For the second time India has hosted this prestigious meeting (1st time in 1996 at Goa).
- This meeting was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- The meeting was attended by Petroleum Ministers from 42 countries and was co-hosted by China and South Korea.
- Theme of 2018 Ministerial Meeting IEF : “The Future of Global Energy Security : Transition, Technology, Trade and Investment”.
- Aim of this meeting : To improve policy and investment decisions, and through increased knowledge and experience sharing.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today imposed a penalty of ₹3 crore on IDBI Bank for failing to comply with norms related to reporting bad loans.
- In July 2017, IDBI Bank had under-reported ₹6,816.6 crore of bad loans for FY16, which were subsequently identified by the RBI.
- Note : The RBI has mandated banks to disclose divergences that exceed 15% of the reported number.
- The Union Cabinet has allowed Ministers of Petroleum and Finance to award oil and gas blocks to successful bidders in an attempt to improve ease of doing business.
- Until now, only the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister had the powers to approve such allotments.
Awards & Honors
- Team India captain Virat Kohli has been named Wisden's leading male cricketer for the 2nd year in a row.
- With this, Kohli has become the 3rd cricketer after Virender Sehwag and Kumar Sangakkara to be honoured with the award multiple times.
- Important Note : Mithali Raj has been honored as Wisden's leading female cricketer.
Science & Technology
- The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) today successfully launched the IRNSS-1I navigation satellite.
- IRNSS-1I will replace the IRNSS-1A which was rendered ineffective after its atomic clocks failed.
- The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi has installed Massive Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) lab on campus for standardisation, R&D and manufacturing of 5G equipment.
- Note : It will be the first of its kind 5G lab in the country and has been set-up at Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology and Management.
MOUs & Agreements
- India and Morocco have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the fields of Mining and Geology for a period of 5 years to promote mineral exploration.
- The Union Cabinet has approved Memorandum of understanding (MoU) between India, United Kingdom and Northern Ireland on the return of Illegal Migrants.
Books & Authors
- Bollywood Actress Katrina Kaif is going to release her autobiography which has been tentatively titled 'Barbie Dreams'.
- Note : She is the only Indian actor to have a Barbie doll modelled on her.
Sports Current Affairs
- Indian badminton player Kidambi Srikanth has become the first Indian male badminton player to attain the world number one ranking since Prakash Padukone in the 1980s.
- Indian wrestler and Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar bagged his third straight Commonwealth Games gold medal after winning the men's Freestyle 74 kg event today.
- Indian wrestler Babita Kumari Phogat won a Silver medal in the women's freestyle 53 kg Nordic System event to claim India's first wrestling medal at the Commonwealth Games 2018.
- Indian wrestler Rahul Aware bagged India's first wrestling gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2018 after beating Canada's Steven Takahashi in the final of men's Freestyle 57 kg event today.
- India shooter Tejaswini Sawant won Silver in the women's 50m Rifle Prone event at the Commonwealth Games 2018.
- This was India's 12th medal in shooting including four golds and 25th overall including 12 golds.
- IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla has confirmed that remaining matches scheduled in Chennai will be shifted due to the Cauvery protests in Tamil Nadu.
