Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Curbing the khaps"
  • Curb - to control or limit something that is harmful
  • Defending - to protect someone or something from attack
  • Honour - the respect that people have for someone / something
  • Clan - a large group of families that are related to each other
  • Abominable - extremely bad, offensive, or unpleasant
  • Entrenched - entrenched attitudes or feelings have existed for a long time and are difficult to change
  • Prejudice - an unreasonable opinion or feeling, especially the feeling of not liking a particular group of people
  • Feudal - related to the social system in which land belonged to powerful lords and the people they allowed to live on the land had to work and fight for them
  • Patriarchal - a patriarchal society, system, organization etc is one in which men have all or most of the power and influence
  • Honour killing - the murder of a woman by a male relative because he believes that she has damaged the family’s image
  • Eradicate - to get rid of something completely, especially something bad
  • Overnight - in a very short time
  • Diktat - an official rule that people are forced to obey
  • Inevitable - impossible to avoid or prevent
  • Stern - so strong that you cannot oppose it
  • Enforce - to make sure that something happens or is done
  • Medieval - old-fashioned
  • Notion - an opinion or belief, especially one that is wrong or silly
  • Ostracisation - to avoid someone intentionally, or to prevent someone from taking part in the activities of a group
  • Strident - expressing or expressed in forceful language that does not try to avoid upsetting other people:
  • Observation - a written or spoken comment about something
  • Significance - the importance that something has because it affects other things
  • Apex -  the top or highest
  • Brook - to not allow or accept something
  • Violate - to do something that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
  • Preventive - done so that something does not become worse or turn into a problem
  • Remedial - done so that something does not become worse or turn into a problem
  • Punitive - relating to or causing punishment or great difficulty
  • Persuade -  to make someone agree to do something by giving them reasons why they should
  • Desist - to stop doing something
  • In the same breath - used for saying that someone has said two things that cannot both be true
  • Feasible - possible or likely to succeed
  • Proceedings - the actions taken, usually in court, to settle a legal matter
  • Brazen - behaving in a way that is not moral or socially acceptable, and not caring if other people are shocked or offended
  • Flout - to deliberately refuse to obey a rule or custom
  • Verdict - an official judgment made in a court
  • Outright - used for emphasizing that something happens or is done completely at one time or in a single process
  • Permissible - allowed to be done by a law or rule
  • Lay down - to officially establish a rule, or to officially say how something should be done
  • Adhered to - to support or believe in an idea, plan, opinion etc
  • Salutary - a salutary experience or warning is one that has a good effect although it is unpleasant
  • Content with - to do something or have something although it is not exactly what you want
  • Expedite - to make something happen quickly or easily
  • Comprehensive - complete and easily achieved
  • Matrimonial - relating to marriage

  • Ramping up - a large increase in activity or in the level of something
  • Investor - a person who puts money into something in order to make a profit or get an advantage

  • Fiscal deficit - a fiscal deficit occurs when a government's total expenditures exceed the revenue that it generates, excluding money from borrowings

  • Fuel - to make something increase or become worse, especially something unpleasant
  • Inflation - economic process in which prices increase so that money becomes less valuable
  • Portfolios - all the investments that a person or company has made
  • Mount - to gradually increase, rise, or get bigger
  • Tailwind - a wind that blows in the same direction in which a vehicle is moving
  • Prospect - the possibility that something will happen
  • Lucrative - bringing a lot of money

  • Outflow - a movement of large amounts of money or large numbers of people from one place to another
  • Pressing - very important and urgent
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • In contrast - used when you are comparing two things or people and saying that the second one is very different from the first
  • Cutting down on - to reduce an amount of something
  • Profligacy - wasting money or other things
  • Re-examine - to look at or think about something carefully again
  • Bond market - a financial market in which the participants are provided with the issuance and trading of debt securities
