National Current Affairs
  • Today (21st January) is the 46th Statehood Day of 3 states Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya.
    • The three states attained statehood on this day in the year 1972 under the North-Eastern Areas (Re-organisation) Act, 1971.
    • While Meghalaya was a part of Assam before becoming a full-fledged state, Manipur and Tripura were Union Territories before 1972.
  • Madhya Pradesh became 1st state to completely implement door-to-door garbage collection in all urban areas, using measures like solid waste management at landfill sites and processing through Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
  • Amid a string of rape incidents in Haryana, the state is going to enact a law providing death penalty for rapists of girls aged 12 years and below.

  • The Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar starrer 'Hindi Medium' was named the Best Film at the 63rd Filmfare Awards
    • Irrfan Khan was named Best Actor for 'Hindi Medium'.
    • Vidya Balan won Best Actress for 'Tumhari Sulu'.

  • Bollywood Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan along with 111 other women achievers were felicitated by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhawan. 
    • Titled the 'First Ladies' awards, it was an initiative of the Ministry of Women and Child Development to honour women who are the first to set a milestone in their respective fields.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered 22 cases against Punjab National Bank (PNB) officials for fraudulently processing loans causing a loss of about ₹80 crore. 
  • American online social media and social networking website Facebook has launched its 'Marketplace' to buy and sell used goods and services across categories such as electronics, entertainment, and housing in India. 
    • The platform also allows buyers to see details like product condition, usage pattern and time of purchase.
  • State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation ONGC is going to acquire the government's entire 51.11% stake in Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) for ₹36,915 crore. 
  • According to a recently released census of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Mauritius was the largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India, followed by the US and UK in 2016-17. 
  • Chkfake Brand Protection Solutions today announced the launch of 'Chkfake'- a unique global platform which allows users to check authenticity of currency notes of any major currency globally.
    • With a vision to build a world free from counterfeits, Chkfake aims at benefiting all stakeholders from consumers to businesses to governments.
Science & Technology
  • Japan’s Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully launched a new Earth observation satellite, equipped with X-band radar which is capable of obtaining high-resolution terrain images.
    • The Advanced Satellite with New System Architecture for Observation (ASNARO-2) was launched aboard a third-generation Epsilon rocket from the Uchinoura Space Center, in the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima, Japan.
  • The International Space Station has completed 7,000 days orbiting the Earth at a 400-km altitude, after its first module was launched in 1998.
New Appointments
  • Om Prakash Rawat has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India.
    • He is going to replace Achal Kumar Joti, whose term ended today. 
    • Rawat will assume office on January 23 and will serve office till November 2019.
  • Senior IPS officer Sudeep Lakhtakia has been appointed as the new Director General (DG) of the 'black cats' commando force NSG.
    • He is currently serving as a Special DG in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) headquarters here.
    • He will replace S P Singh who will retire from the post of NSG DG on January 31.
  • Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena today announced that he would take control over the country's economy from Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe amid the crisis between the ruling United National Party (UNP) and its coalition partner. 
    • The President would manage the economy through a special economic council headed by him.
