International Current Affairs
  • The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry today announced that it has granted citizenship to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
  • For the first time in more than 60 years, the Sri Lankan government today announced that it is going to allow women over the age of 18 to buy alcohol legally. 
National Current Affairs
  • Today (12th January) is National Youth Day.
    • This day is celebrated every year on 12th of January, the birth anniversary of social reformer, philosopher and thinker Swami Vivekananda.
    • Since 1985 onwards, National Youth Day is being celebrated all over the country.
    • To celebrate this day, the 22nd National Youth Festival was held in Rohtak, Haryana. 
    • Theme : ‘Sankalp Se Siddhi’.
  • The Maharashtra government is going to introduce a separate category for orphans appearing for various competitive exams
  • For the first time, an All-woman bikers contingent from the Border Security Force (BSF) is going to be part of the Republic Day parade this year. 
    • The contingent, named 'Seema Bhavani', will include women aged between 25 and 30 years, who are drawn from various combat ranks of the force. The women contingents of Army, Navy, Air Force made their debut in 2015.
  • The External Affairs Ministry has announced that the last page of passports, which carries the holder's address, will no longer be printed, making the document an invalid address proof. 
    • This comes after a committee recommended that the father's name, which is also on the last page, be omitted.

  • The Gal Godot starrer 2017 film 'Wonder Woman' has won the award for Best Action Movie at the 2018 Critics' Choice Awards
  • Gallup International Association (GIA) has ranked Indian PM Narendra Modi as the number three world leader in its annual survey.
    • This is the highest ever rank bagged by any Indian PM in the GIA global polls.
    • US President Donald Trump stood at the top position followed by the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Books & Authors
  • A comic book titled 'The Wall', based on former India captain Rahul Dravid's life, has been released by Sportwalk, a Chennai-based sports media and merchandise startup, on the occasion of the cricketer's 45th birthday. 
    • The book includes 15 iconic moments from the life and career of Dravid, including the 2001 Eden Gardens fightback.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio is going to create its own cryptocurrency called JioCoin.
    • Mukesh Ambani's son Akash is expected to lead the project, comprising a 50-member team of young professionals to work on blockchain technology for JioCoin. 
  • India has granted a financial assistance worth over ₹288 crore ($45.27 million) to develop Sri Lanka's Kankesanthurai (KKS) Harbour into a commercial port. 
    • The move is aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka's efforts to become a regional maritime hub.
    • Note : The KKS Harbour was destroyed by the LTTE during Sri Lanka's civil war.
  • Telecom tycoon Strive Masiyiwa (57) has become Zimbabwe's first billionaire with a fortune of $1.7 billion, according to Forbes. 
Science & Technology
  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) today successfully launched its 100th satellite from Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh, along with 30 other satellites. 
    • While three satellites are from India, the remaining 28 are foreign, including micro and nano-satellites from six countries. 
    • India's weather observation Cartosat-2 series satellite was the heaviest satellite, weighing 710 kg.
Deaths
  • Former wrestler and coach Sukhchain Singh Cheema (67), who won bronze in the 1974 Asian Games, passed away in a road accident near Patiala today.
    • Sukhchain, a Dronacharya awardee, was the son of Rustum-e-Hind Olympian wrestler Kesar Singh Cheema.
  • Renowned writer, poet and critique Dudhnath Singh passed away.
    • Mr Singh had command on eight genres of Hindi writing including novel, story, poem, and memoirs. 
    • Reechh, Raktpat, Akhiri Kalam, Niral Aatmhanta Astha, Mahadevi, Yamgatha, Dharmkdhetre-Kurukshetre and Laut aa o dhar are his famous creations.
    • His poetry collection Ek Aur Aadmi, Agli Shatabdi Ke Naam and Yuva Khushbu are much acclaimed collections of Hindi literature. 
New Appointments
  • Indu Malhotra today became the first ever female lawyer to be directly recommended for the position of a Supreme Court judge by the Collegium. 
    • The five-judge Collegium unanimously recommended Malhotra and Uttarakhand Chief Justice KM Joseph for the six Supreme Court judge vacancies. 
  • US-based software major IBM today named James Kavanaugh as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
    • Kayanaugh will replace Martin Schroeter, who is going to take a new role as Senior Vice President, Global Markets.
