International Current Affairs
- Today (5th December) is World Soil Day.
- The International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), in 2002, adopted a resolution proposing the 5th of December as World Soil Day to celebrate the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to human wellbeing.
- Theme of World Soil Day 2017 : "Caring for the Planet starts from the Ground"
- Today (5th December) is International Volunteer Day (IVD).
- This day is an international observance designated by the United Nations since 1985.
- It offers an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make visible their contributions - at local, national and international levels - to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
- Theme of IVD 2017 : "Volunteers Act First. Here. Everywhere"
- The United States has pulled out of UN Global Compact on Migration.
National Current Affairs
- Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district was included in the National Capital Region (NCR), making it the 23rd district to be included in the region.
- Note : Centred upon National Capital Territory of Delhi, the NCR includes 13 districts of Haryana, 8 districts of UP, and 2 districts of Rajasthan.
- The Supreme Court today began the final hearing in the Ayodhya dispute, a day before the 25th anniversary of Babri Masjid's demolition in Ayodhya.
- A special 3-judge bench is hearing a total of 13 appeals filed against the 2010 Allahabad High Court judgment dividing the 2.77-acre site between the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla deity.
- The 6th International Tourism Mart (ITM) 2017 was held in Guwahati, Assam.
- It was inaugurated by Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi, Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal and Union Tourism minister K L Alphons.
- The Maharashtra government granted administrative approval to the Versova-Bandra sea link (VBSL) project.
- The 1st International Exhibition and Conference on AYUSH and Wellness systems, International AROGYA 2017 is being organized in Delhi from 4th to 7th December 2017.
- It was inaugurated by AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik.
- Theme of International AROGYA 2017 : ‘Enhancing the global potential of AYUSH’.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has announced the creation of a new cryptocurrency 'Petro' in a bid to ease the country's economic crisis.
- This new cryptocurrency will be backed by the nation's oil, gold, gas, and diamond reserves.
- Kerala Electricity Minister MM Mani today inaugurated India's largest floating solar power plant at the Banasura Sagar dam in Wayanad district.
- The plant, worth approximately ₹9.25 crore, floats on 6,000 square metres of water surface.
- Banks have assured UIDAI that they will be able to open Aadhaar enrolment and updation centres in the stipulated 10% of their branches by December-end.
- Note : The deadline for reaching the target was October 31.
Science & Technology
- Technology giant Google has launched a lightweight Android Oreo Go edition operating system designed for devices with RAM up to 1 GB.
- The Android Go offers 30% faster startup time and up to 2 times optimisation of storage space.
Deaths
- Veteran Bollywood actor Shashi Kapoor (79) passed away.
- He was known for his films like 'Deewaar'.
- He had been honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2011 and the 2014 Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
- Former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed by Houthi rebel fighter.
- This comes a day after the former President formally renounced his alliance with the Iran-backed rebel group and re-aligned his forces with Saudi Arabia.
Awards & Honors
- A 16-year-old Syrian refugee, Mohamad Al Jounde, was honored with the International Children's Peace Prize for building a school and providing education to hundreds of children who fled to Lebanon to escape the Syrian civil war.
- Al Jounde received the prize from Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai who had won the prize in 2013 for her activist work in education.
- Indian-American Democratic Senator Kamala Harris has topped the Foreign Policy magazine's 50 Leading Global Thinkers' list.
- Note : Harris, the first-ever Indian-American to be elected to the US Senate.
Sports Current Affairs
- Indian professional boxer Vijender Singh is set to defend his WBO Oriental and Asia Pacific Super Middleweight titles against Ghana's Ernest Amuzu in Jaipur on December 23.
- Olympic medallist Vijender, who has remained unbeaten in all his nine matches so far, will face Amuzu, who has 23 wins including 21 knockouts in 25 bouts so far.
- Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness unveiled a stone statue of former sprinter Usain Bolt at Independence Park in Kingston as a tribute to the eight-time Olympic gold winner.
- The sculpture has been designed by renowned Jamaican sculptor Basil Watson.
