International Current Affairs
  • Today (18th December) is International Migrants Day.
    • On 18 December 1990, the UN General Assembly adopted the international convention on the protection of the rights of migrant workers and members of their families.
    • Theme of International Migrants Day 2017 : "Safe Migration in a World on the Move"
National Current Affairs
  • Today (18th December) is Minorities Rights Day.
    • This day is celebrated to protect rights of the minority communities as well as bringing the better understanding among religious minorities in India.
    • On this day in 1992 that the United nations adopted the declaration on the Rights of Persons belonging to National or Ethnic National or and Linguistic Minorities declaring that: “States shall protect the existence of the national or ethnic, cultural, religious and linguistic identity of minorities within their respective territories and encourage conditions for the promotions of that identity”.
  • The counting of votes for the Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat assembly election took place today and marked BJP’s victory in both the states.
    • BJP all set to form government for sixth straight term in Gujarat; Heads for a win in Himachal Pradesh
  • The Andhra Pradesh state cabinet has approved a scheme to provide a pension of ₹1,500 per month to transgenders above 18 years of age in the state. 
    • The state will also provide ration cards, residential plots, financial aid to open businesses, and scholarships to the transgenders. 
    • Important Note : With this, Andhra Pradesh became the 3rd state after Kerala and Odisha to provide a pension for transgenders.
  • A research institute for the study of 'Bhagavad Gita' would soon be set up by CM Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government in Mathura.
    • The research at the institute would include the study on Gayan (singing), Vadan (the art of music) and Nratya (dance) of the Krishna age, the minister added.
  • The Karnataka High Court has struck down 2014 amendment rules that mandated pictorial health warnings to cover 85% of tobacco product packaging space, holding that they violated Constitutional norms.
    • However, it made it clear that 40% pictorial health warning rule, which existed prior to amendment rules, will remain in force.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Centre is going to increase the pension it provides to people from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households from the current ₹200-₹1,000 a month to around ₹1,600.
Science & Technology
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has discovered eighth planet circling Kepler-90, a Sun-like star which is 2545 light-years far from Earth.
    • It was dubbed as Kepler-90i.
    • This eighth planet was discovered by Researchers Christopher Shallue and Andrew Vanderburg by applying Google’s machine-learning technology to data collected by NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 60 MW (megawatt) Tuirial hydropower project in Aizawl, Mizoram. 
    • Note : This is first large hydropower central government project to be commissioned in Mizoram.
Awards & Honors
  • British long-distance runner Mo Farah was named the winner of the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year 2017 award
    • The four-time Olympic champion had won 10,000m gold and 5,000m silver at the world championships in London this summer.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Former AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder Kaka, who lifted the 2002 World Cup with Brazil, announced his retirement from football today. 
    • Kaka, who won the Champions League and the Ballon d'Or award in 2007 while playing for AC Milan, had become the most expensive footballer in history after his then-world record £56 million transfer from Milan to Madrid.
  • Indian wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Sushil Kumar won Gold medals at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. 
    • This was double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar's first medal in international wrestling since his gold medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
