International Current Affairs
  • The Oxford English Dictionary has selected 'Youthquake' as Word of the Year 2017.
    • Meaning of this word : “A significant cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people.”
National Current Affairs
  • Today (16th December 2017) is Vijay Diwas (Victory Day).   
    • We observe this day to remember the martyrs who laid down their lives for the nation during 1971 India-Pakistan war.
  • Today is the 48th anniversary of the 1971 India–Pakistan war.
    • This is the first war after World War-II that the Indian Army won conclusively.
    • This is the only war that the independent Indian Army planned, executed and carried out with precision and captured 93,000 prisoners.
  • Today marks the 5th anniversary of brutal ‎Nirbhaya‬ gang rape case.
    • 5 years have passed since a young student in New Delhi died after she was gang raped on a moving bus by 6 men, including a minor.
    • Note : The juvenile convict of this case walked free on 20th December 2015 and currently working in a Dhaba in South India.
  • The Union Cabinet has passed the Bill to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI) with a National Medical Commission
    • This new bill suggests a four-tier structure for the regulation of medical education, under a 20-member National Medical Commission.
  • The Bihar government has launched Safe City Surveillance Scheme for checking crime against women. 
    • This scheme aims to bring all major public places under watch of close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and improve overall crime control in the state.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have signed a MoU for facilitating the supply of sand for highways construction work.
    • The MoU aims to fill sand supply gap by facilitating the availability of sand for concessionaires working on highways projects who were facing shortage of sand at many sites.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Tuirial Hydropower Project in Mizoram
    • The project, which was cleared by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1998 but kept getting delayed, will boost the socio-economic development of Mizoram.
  • The government has waived the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on all Debit card, UPI, and Aadhaar-based transactions of up to ₹2,000 for the next two years, starting January 1, 2018. 
    • The charges will be reimbursed by the government to the banks.
    • Note : MDR is the rate charged to a merchant by a bank for providing debit and credit card services.
Science & Technology
  • In a bid to attract more youngsters, UK-based astronomers have named new constellations based on present day youth icons from various disciplines. 
    • The constellations represent Harry Potter's glasses, Serena Williams's tennis racquet, Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, and Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt. 
    • Constellation - a group of stars forming a recognizable pattern that is traditionally named after its apparent form or identified with a mythological figure
  • US-based MagLab has successfully tested the world's strongest superconducting magnet, producing 32 teslas (a unit of magnetic field strength), 33% stronger than the previous record. 
  • India ranked 109th out of 122 countries in the Mobile internet speed and 76th out of 133 countries in broadband space in the November 2017 Speedtest Global Index (SGI) released by popular internet speed testing service provider Ookla.

New Appointments
  • Vodafone India today announced that Manish Dawar will take over as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with effect from January 1, 2018. 
    • He will replace Thomas Reisten, who has been Vodafone India's CFO for past four years.
  • Rahul Gandhi officially took charge as the President of Indian National Congress, replacing his mother, Sonia Gandhi, who was on the post for 19 years. 
    • Note : He is the sixth member of the Nehru-Gandhi family to take charge as the President of the party.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Chennai is going to host Jallikattu Premier League, an Indian Premier League-styled event for the bull-taming sport of jallikattu, on January 7. 
    • Around 500 participants from 17 districts of Tamil Nadu are expected at the event, while bulls belonging to MPs and MLAs will be used. 
  • Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kings XI Punjab today appointed former Australia batsman Brad Hodge as head coach on a three-year contract.
