International Current Affairs
- The 5 day Defence of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Exercise (DANX-2017) was conducted at New Delhi today.
- Main objective of DANX 2017 : To practice and validate procedures and drills of all Command forces aimed at defending strategic Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
National Current Affairs
- The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs has decided to hold the Parliament's Winter Session from 15th December 2017 to 5th January 2018.
- Bill to ban triple talaq and bill on OBC Commission are likely to be introduced in the session.
- The Parliament session will begin a day after the second and final phase of polling for the Gujarat Assembly election.
- Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will soon introduce Electric buses in the city.
- President Ram Nath Kovind has promulgated an ordinance under Article 123 of Constitute to amend Indian Forest Act, 1927 to encourage bamboo plantation by farmers in private lands.
- The ordinance omits bamboo (taxonomically a grass) grown in non-forest areas from definition of trees.
- The omission, thereby exempts it from requiring permits for felling or transportation of bamboo grown in non-forest areas.
- The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) conducted Multi State Mega Mock Tsunami Exercise 2017 along the entire East Coast in 31 coastal districts across four States and one Union Territory (West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry).
- This was the 1st time the entire eastern coast covered by the mock drill.
- The tsunami drill simulated tsunami waves originating from a high-intensity earthquake near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) launched India’s first integrated lifestyle and banking digital service platform named YONO (acronym for ‘You Only Need One’).
- YONO is first digital banking platform that will allow customers to meet their lifestyle needs across 14 categories including booking and renting cabs, entertainment, dining experience, travel and stay etc.
- The Ministry of Finance today clarified that it is not considering any proposal to withdraw cheque book facility for banks.
- Earlier this week, Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said the government might make such a move to encourage digital transactions.
- Note : Currently, over 95% transactions happen via cash and cheques.
- The new amendments to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code bars wilful defaulters and entities whose accounts have been classified as bad loans from bidding for assets under the insolvency law.
- The ordinance aims at putting in place safeguards to prevent unscrupulous and undesirable persons from misusing the provisions of the code.
Awards & Honors
- Bollywood Actor Rajkummar Rao was named the Best Actor at 11th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA).
- Mayank Tewari and Amit V Masurkar won the award for Best Screenplay Award.
- They were honored with these awards for the black comedy drama 'Newton'.
