International Current Affairs
  • India and Bangladesh have confirmed that External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will visit Dhaka in the first half of September to attend the 4th Bangladesh-India Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) meeting
    • The JCC meeting would review the implementation and progress of decisions taken during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India in April.
  • Iranian President Hassan Rouhani who was recently sworn-in for the second term in office today put forward a new cabinet line-up that included NO WOMEN, despite criticism of their absence from his reformist allies.
National Current Affairs
  • The Independence Day this year will be observed as 'Sankalp Parva', or 'Day of Resolve'n.
  • To celebrate the 75 years of Quit India Movement and formation of Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army), the Ministry of Culture will hold an exhibition of declassified documents related to the events. 
    • The documents feature letters by Mahatma Gandhi among others. 
    • The exhibition will be held at National Archives of India from August 9 to September 1.
  • A bill reclassifying coconut as a 'tree' was passed in the Goa Legislative Assembly today. 
    • It was earlier classified as a 'palm' by the previous government, making it easy to cut it down without a formal permission. 
    • The reclassification was one of the promises made by the Goa Forward Party, a partner in the Manohar Parrikar-led government.
  • The Bombay High Court today accepted Maharashtra government's proposal that it wouldn't allow children below 14 years of age to participate in the Dahi Handi festival, which witnesses several injuries to youngsters. 
New Appointments
  • Chief Justice of India Jagdish Singh Khehar has recommended Supreme Court judge Justice Dipak Misra as his successor after his retirement on August 27 this year. 
    • Justice Misra, will be India's 45th Chief Justice.
  • Flipkart has appointed its Head of Marketplace Anil Goteti to lead eBay India
    • Goteti currently heads the marketplace business, pricing and promotions platforms at Flipkart and will also lead cross-border trade business at eBay India. 
    • Note : Flipkart recently acquired eBay India as part of a $1.4 billion fund raising round led by Microsoft and Tencent.

  • Ma Huateng, Chairman of Chinese internet giant Tencent, became the Country's richest man after overtaking e-commerce major Alibaba's Founder Jack Ma today. 
    • This marked the first time he ranked at the top in China.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Russian entrepreneur Viacheslav Semenchuk has announced plans for an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) of the world's first digital currency aimed specifically at Jewish communities across the globe.
  • Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has allowed SBI's appeal that it cannot be held guilty of deficient service if a customer loses money after handing it to a stranger inside the bank.
  • The Kannada Development Authority (KDA) has directed Nationalised, Rural and Scheduled Banks in the state to ensure that their employees learn Kannada within six months, failing which they will be terminated from service. 
    • The banks have been asked to set up Kannada learning centres within the branch premises. 
    • The authority has also mandated that banks follow the three-language policy.
  • Public sector banks have written off nearly ₹2.5 lakh crore loans in the last five financial years, the Finance Ministry has recently announced. 
    • Important Points to Note :
      • As many as 27 public sector banks have written off ₹81,683 crore in 2016-17, the highest in the last five fiscals. 
      • The State Bank of India and its associates alone have written-off ₹27,574 crore during the 2016-17 period.
  • Axis Bank recently launched a campaign titled 'Experience Axis' featuring Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone.
Sports Current Affairs
  • 18-year-old India's junior para-athlete Rinku Hooda has won Silver medal in the Javelin throw F46 at the 1st World Para Athletics Junior Championships in Switzerland today.
