International Current Affairs
  • Qatar has approved an unprecedented law that will grant permanent residency to expats (persons who lives outside their native country) fulfilling certain conditions. 
    • Permanent residency cardholders will be treated like Qatari nationals for state-run educational and healthcare services and will be given priority, after locals, for military and civilian public jobs. 
  • UK's 96-year-old Prince Philip today retired from public duty after serving for over 65 years as the Captain General of the Royal Marines.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its ex-post facto approval for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed among India and various BRICs countries for establishment of the BRICS Agriculture Research Platform (BRICS-ARP).
    • Note : BRICS-ARP will be the natural global platform for science-led agriculture-based sustainable development for addressing the issues of world hunger, under-nutrition, poverty and inequality, particularly between farmers' and non-farmers' income, and enhancing agricultural trade, bio-security and climate resilient agriculture.
  • The Union Cabinet has been apprised of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Spain on India-Spain Cooperation in renewable energy
    • Important Points to Note :
    • The MoU was signed on 30th May, 2017 at Spain.
    • The MoU will help in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries with the exchange of expertise and networking of information.
National Current Affairs
  • Goa cabinet today passed an amendment granting Coconut Palm the status of “State tree”.
  • For the first time in history, BJP became the largest political party in Rajya Sabha after pushing Congress to the second spot. 
    • This comes after BJP MP Sampatiya Uikey took oath as the Rajya Sabha member today. 
    • Note : BJP now has 58 members, whereas Congress accounts to 57 members in the upper house.
  • The central government today made Aadhaar mandatory for the registration of deaths and announced that the decision will come into effect from October 1, 2017. 
  • The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has decided to include content related to Goods and Services Tax and demonetisation in its 2018 curriculum. 
  • Haryana today barred all government school teachers from stepping inside the classrooms with mobile phones.
Recent Committees in News
  • Market Regulator SEBI today set up a committee on 'fair market conduct'.
    • This committee will suggest measures for improving surveillance of the markets and strengthen rules for algo trades, among other norms.
    • Head of this committee T K Viswanathan (former law secretary) 
  • The Union Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MEITY) has constituted an expert Committee to study and identify key data protection issues and recommend methods for addressing them
    • The 10-member committee will be headed by : Justice B N Srikrishna (Supreme Court Judge (retired))
Deaths
  • Actor Robert Hard (91), who portrayed the role of Minister of Magic 'Cornelius Fudge' in four of the 'Harry Potter' films passed away.
    • Hardy is also known for starring in the BBC series 'All Things Great and Small'.
Science & Technology
  • Finland-based scientists have generated a batch of protein using electricity and carbon dioxide
    • The protein can be produced anywhere the renewable energy, like solar energy, is available and can be developed for use as food and animal fodder.
    • Note : Creating food from electricity is 10 times more energy efficient than photosynthesis and could help alleviate world hunger.
  • Israel has successfully launched Venus satellite (Vegetation and Environment Monitoring New Micro-Satellite), its first spatial environmental research vehicle designed for orbital monitoring of Earth's vegetation.
    • Venus satellite is an earth-observation micro-satellite designed jointly by Israel's agency and France's National Centre for Space Studies (CNES).
  • The Indian Army has developed a mobile application titled 'Humraaz' through which serving soldiers can track details like postings and promotions. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Lok Sabha has passed the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2017 by voice vote. 
    • This bill seeks to amend the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 to insert provisions for handling cases related to stressed assets of banks
    • Note : Stressed assets are loans where the borrower has defaulted in repayment or where the loan has been restructured.
  • State-owned oil marketing company Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) today announced that it has increased the commission offered to dealers up to 50% with effect from August 1. 
  • Australia's largest lender Commonwealth Bank of Australia has been sued by government for 53,700 alleged breaches of money laundering and terrorism financing laws. 
    • The case relates to its cash deposit machines, which allow anonymous deposits to recipient accounts that can then be funnelled offshore. 
  • The Lok Sabha has passed the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Amendment) Bill, 2017 by voice vote. 
    • The bill enables exit of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and increase authorised capital of the development institution six times to Rs 30000 crore. 
    • The Bill also seeks to amend certain clauses in the light of reference pf the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development Act, 2006 in the proposed legislation.
  • The Union Government has launched e-Rashtriya Kisan Agri Mandi (e-RaKAM) portal to provide a platform for farmers to sell agricultural produce. 
    • Note : e-RaKAM is a first of its kind initiative that leverages technology to connect farmers from the smallest villages to the biggest markets of the world through internet.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Brazil's Neymar has become the world's most expensive footballer, with Paris Saint-Germain signing him for a five-year deal from Barcelona for a fee of ₹1,680 crore (€222 million)
