International Current Affairs
  • Today (29th August) is the International Day Against Nuclear Tests.
    • Aim :  To raise awareness about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions.
  • PM Narendra Modi will be on a visit to China from 3rd to 5th September 2017.
    • During this visit, he will attend the 9th BRICS Summit.
  • To reduce plastic pollution, Kenya today imposed the world's toughest law against plastic bags
    • The law punishes Kenyans producing, selling or using plastic bags with a maximum fine of over ₹25 lakh or a four-year jail term. 
  • A set of 6 caves housing over 50 artefacts from the last Ice Age has become the 42nd UNESCO World Heritage Site in Germany
    • The artefacts, which were composed of bone and ivory, date back 33,000 to 43,000 years. 
  • US President Donald Trump has lifted an Obama-era order which banned police from using surplus military equipment including grenade launchers, bulletproof vests, and riot shields. 
  • China has been drafting a law on the appropriate use of its National Anthem by introducing criminal prosecution for violators.
    • The draft legislation also made it illegal to use the national anthem at funerals and other "inappropriate" private occasions.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and Germany have signed an agreement on technical cooperation under the Indo-German Energy Programme – Green Energy Corridors (IGEN-GEC).
    • The agreement was signed between India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH India on behalf of Germany.
National Current Affairs
  • Today (29th August) is National Sports day.
    • This day marks the birthday of Dhyan Chand (29 August 1905), the hockey legend who won Three Olympic gold medals for India (1928,1932 and 1936)
    • Note : The first National Sport Day was held in 2012.
  • Sanskrit Diwas is being celebrated across the country.
  • Today is Telugu Language Day (Telugu Bhasha Dinotsavam).
    • This day is celebrated on 29 August each year in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana states.
    • This date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of the Telugu poet Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy Panthulu.
  • To spur research activities in ocean science and develop technology to harness ocean resources, the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) is going to launch Deep Ocean Mission by January 2018.
    • Aim of this project : To explore and harness mineral resources beneath the ocean floor.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • In order to incentivise digital transactions the government is planning to offer 2% discount over the applicable GST rate on bills up to ₹2,000
  • Digital payments and ecommerce company Paytm has rebranded Postcard, its digital version of gifting money in an envelope on festive occasions, to Lifafa (which means envelope in Hindi) after India Post sent a notice to the company to stop using the term 'postcard'.  
  • The government today announced that GST will be applicable on fringe benefits an employee gets from his employer.
    • "Fringe benefits are a supply of goods or services and are liable to tax if not exempted," it clarified. 
  • US-based cab-hailing startup Uber launched in-app messaging feature along with multi-destination rides for users in India.
    • The feature aims to help riders and drivers get in touch without incurring call charges or sharing their contact numbers.
New Appointments
  • US-based social media platform Reddit's first employee Chris Slowe has been appointed as the startup's Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
