International Current Affairs
- The US has ruled that being an entry-level computer programmer will no longer qualify as a specialist profession, which is a requirement for applying for an H-1B work visa.
- The US Citizenship and Immigration Services issued the guidelines to prevent employers from temporarily hiring foreign workers on low salaries to displace local American workers on higher salaries.
- Russia has sought India's EVM technology for 2018 presidential elections.
- Note : During the Uttarakhand Assembly polls, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Election Commission, Nikolai Levichev, had visited the state to closely monitor the functioning of EVMs and the electioneering process.
- Malaysian PM Mohd Najib Tun Razak today announced the launch of multiple-entry e-visas, allowing Indians to fly to Malaysia and visit South Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia using just one visa.
- Malaysia will serve as the gateway to ASEAN for Indians, officials said.
- Note : Malaysia also decided to not charge visa fees and approve online applications within 48 hours for Indians.
- China has announced plans to build a new city, a special economic zone, in Hebei province to decongest its capital Beijing.
- The city will cover an area nearly three times that of the US city of New York.
National Current Affairs
- Today (5th April) is India’s National Maritime Day.
- On this day in 1919 navigation history was created when SS Loyalty, the first ship of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company, journeyed to the United Kingdom.
- Theme of the year 2017 : “Connecting India through Shipping”
- Note : World Maritime Day is observed on 29th September.
- During the first Cabinet meeting of the new Uttar Pradesh government today, CM Yogi Adityanath waived farmers' loan of up to ₹1 lakh.
- The state will spend around ₹36,000 crore to fund the loan waiver which will benefit around 86 lakh farmers.
- Adityanath has also directed officials to take steps to make Yoga, along with a self-defence programme for girls, compulsory in all state government-run schools.
- The Madhya Pradesh government has increased the minimum wages of workers on the basis of the revised dearness allowance (DA) rates in the state with effect from April 1.
- As per the new rates, unskilled workers would get ₹7,125/month at the rate of ₹274/day, while semi-skilled workers would get ₹7,982/month at the rate of ₹307/day.
- Union Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore today announced a new category of visas for foreign filmmakers.
- Union Road Minister Nitin Gadkari today said the first express highway project in India's Northeast region will be developed along the Brahmaputra river in Assam at an estimated cost of ₹40,000 crore.
Banking & Economic Affairs
- The Aditya Birla Group today announced that it has received licence from the Reserve Bank of India to start its payments bank.
- Headed by Kumar Mangalam Birla, Aditya Birla Nuvo had set up a joint venture with telecom major Idea called Aditya Birla Idea Payments Bank.
- Important Note : At present, Airtel and India Post are offering payments bank services in the country.
- Following SBI's new rules, including charges on certain transactions, effective April 1, some customers have taken to social media to call for a "no transaction day" on April 6.
- They are calling for protests from April 24-April 26, if the bank does not remove the charges.
- Customers of six banks that merged with SBI also have to follow the rules.
- Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that allows the transfer of cash from Russia to Ukraine only through companies controlled by the Russian Central Bank.
- This comes after Ukraine forced local banks to ban six Russian payment systems last year. Notably, money transfers from Russia to Ukraine dropped from $1 billion in 2015 to $622 million in 2016.
Awards & Honors
- World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee has won the 2016 Turing Award.
- Note : Turing Award is regarded as computing's highest award.
- Virat Kohli has been named as the Leading Cricketer in the World for 2016, in this year's edition of the Wisden Cricketer's Almanack.
- Note : Kohli becomes the 3rd Indian to be bestowed with the honour, with Virender Sehwag winning it twice in 2008 and 2009, and Sachin Tendulkar in 2010.
New Appointments
- Geetha Johri has been appointed as the Director General of Police of Gujarat.
- With this she became the state's first woman police chief.
Deaths
- Hindustani classical singer Kishori Amonkar (84), who received the Padma Vibhushan in 2002, passed away.
- Amonkar, who sang in the Jaipur gharana style, was also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Rashtrapati Award, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Sangeet Samragni Award.
Sports Current Affairs
- The Indian Premier League's 10th edition is set to begin today, with defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad beginning their title defence against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
- Important Points to Note :
- IPL's inaugural edition was won by Rajasthan Royals after defeating Chennai Super Kings in the final in 2008.
- Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders have each won the tournament twice.
- Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli leads the list of highest run-getters in IPL, scoring 4,110 runs in 131 innings.
- Kohli also holds the record for most runs in a single IPL season, scoring 973 runs in 16 innings in 2016.
- Mumbai Indians pacer Lasith Malinga has claimed most wickets in IPL history, taking 143 wickets in 98 innings at a strike rate of 16.
- Bangladesh cricket team's limited overs captain Mashrafe Mortaza has announced that he will retire from T20 international cricket after the end of the series against Sri Lanka.
