International Current Affairs
  • Today (28th April) is Workers' Memorial Day / World Day for Safety and Health at Work.
    • This is an international day of remembrance and action for workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell by their work.
    • Theme of Workers' Memorial Day 2017 : Good health and safety for all workers whoever they are
  • Kazakhstan has opened its honorary consulate in Chennai.
    • It will be headed by well-known businessman Suraj Shantakumar. 
    • This consulate will cover 3 states namely, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
    • Important Note : This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Kazakhstan.
  • Poland today assured India of its support to New Delhi's bid for membership in the elite Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and a permanent seat in the expanded UN Security Council.
    • This was conveyed by Polish Prime Minister Beata Syzdlo to Vice President Hamid Ansari when the two leaders met here to discuss issues of bilateral and mutual interests.
National Current Affairs
  • India's 1st electric taxi trial would be launched in Nagpur from 24th May 2017. 
    • Mahindra and Mahindra is set to provide 200 taxis for the initiative.
  • Delhi's Teen Murti Marg is set to be renamed after Israeli city Haifa ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Jewish nation, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has announced today. 
    • While the Teen Murti Marg will be renamed as Teen Murti Haifa Marg, Teen Murti Chowk will be renamed as Teen Murti Haifa Chowk.
  • The Home Ministry is going to raise an all-woman India Reserve Battalion (IRB) in Jammu and Kashmir
    • The decision has been taken in the wake of girl students throwing stones at security forces in Srinagar a few days ago.
  • The Centre today released an amount of ₹19,000 crore out of the promised ₹80,000-crore development package for Jammu and Kashmir
    • Note : The package was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2015. 
  • In the wake of multiple road accidents in the state, Andhra Pradesh state government has declared "a war against road accidents". 
    • Andhra's toll plazas will also be equipped with breath analysers.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and Cyprus have signed 4 agreements following delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades in New Delhi. 
    • The Singed Agreements are :  
      • Agreement on cooperation in the area of merchant shipping. 
      • Agreement to boost air services between the two countries.
      • Executive programme on culture, education and scientific cooperation for the years 2017 to 2020. 
      • Work plan under a programme of cooperation in agriculture for the period 2017-2018. 
Science & Technology
  • India successfully test-fired its surface-to-surface intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) Agni-III from a defence test facility off Odisha coast today. 
    • The indigenously built highly sophisticated missile blasted off from a mobile launcher at the launching complex-IV of Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island at about 9:15 AM.
  • China will begin construction of a permanent manned space station in 2019.
    • This comes after China carried out a successful refuelling mission from its first-ever cargo spacecraft to its Tiangong-2 space laboratory. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • China's SoftBank, the largest investor in Snapdeal, has given an in-principle, non-binding approval for the e-commerce startup's merger with rival Flipkart,.
    • SoftBank has given an in-principle nod to hold 20% stake in the merged entity and has also approved a plan to buy out Snapdeal’s existing investors ahead of the potential merger, the report added.
  • American payments company PayPal is eyeing a Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) licence to launch a mobile wallet in India.
    • Note : Earlier this month, Amazon was granted licence to launch mobile wallet in India.
  • The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is going to build a new oil terminal at Motihari (Bihar) to supply fuel to Nepal via the planned pipeline up to Amlekganj in Nepal. 
    • Note : The old terminal functioning at Raxaul in Bihar will be shut down as it does not conform to the current OISD (Oil Industry Safety Directorate) guidelines. 
Awards & Honors
  • Srishti Kaur (Noida) has been crowned Miss Teen Universe 2017 after beating 25 contestants from around the world at the beauty pageant held in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua.
    • She also won an award for the best national costume, which featured the Indian national bird peacock. 
  • Bhubaneswar has become the 1st Indian city to win Pierre L’enfant International Planning excellence award-2017 instituted by the American Planning Association (APA). 
    • Bhubaneswar has been chosen for its good and advanced town planning and engaging its residents in the planning process. 
  • UNESCO to screen the Indian short film “Azaad” directed by Rahul V. Chittella’s, as a part of World Press Freedom Day event that is scheduled to be held from May 1-4 in Jakarta, Indonesia. 
    • Important Points to Note :
      • World Press Freedom Day is celebrated by UNESCO to celebrate the principle of freedom of the press. 
      • Theme of World Press Freedom Day 2017 : “Critical Minds for Critical Times: Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies“.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India's 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev will get his own wax statue at the upcoming Madame Tussauds museum in Delhi
    • Besides Kapil, Sachin Tendulkar, David Beckham and Lionel Messi are the other sportspersons who will have wax figures at the museum. 
    • Note : This will be India's first Madame Tussauds museum, and will be inaugurated in July.
  • Four stands at Kolkata's Eden Gardens stadium were named after Indian Army martyrs today. 
    • Cricket Association of Bengal President Sourav Ganguly and Army's Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi dedicated the stands to 1962 Indo-China war martyrs Subedar Joginder Singh and Lt Col Dhan Singh Thapa
    • Two other stands were named after Late Col NJ Nair and Late Hav Hangpan Dada.
