International Current Affairs
  • Today (26th April) is World Intellectual Property Day.
    • The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe".
    • 26 April was chosen as the date to celebrate this day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force in 1970.
    • Theme of 2017 Innovation – Improving Lives.
  • Sri Lankan PM Ranil Wickremesinghe is on a four-day visit to India.
    • He is the third leader from India’s South Asian neighbourhood to be visiting India.
    • Prior to this, Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina (from 7-10 April) and the President of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari (from 17-21 April) have visited India.
    • Note : Modi is expected to visit Nepal on 12 May and after attending the Vesak Day celebrations—which commemorates Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and passing away.
  • Belgium has become the first country to open an honorary consulate office in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), Gandhinagar, Gujarat. 
    • Note : Belgium already has two Consulates-General in Mumbai and Chennai, and an honorary consulate in Kolkata. 
  • PM Narendra Modi assured his Nepalese counterpart Pushpa Kamal Dahal that India will extend all possible assistance for the elections to Nepal's local government bodies. 
    • The elections, which are scheduled for May 14 and June 14, will be the first polls for local government bodies in the Himalayan country in 20 years.
  • The International Road federation (IRF) has named India to be the host of the 18th World Road Meeting (WRM 2017) which is scheduled to be held on November 13, 2017. 
    • Theme of WRM 2017 : ‘Safe Roads and Smart Mobility: The Engines of Economic Growth’.
National Current Affairs
  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today swept the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, winning 184 out of the total 270 wards of the civic body. 
    • While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) finished second by managing to win 46 wards, the Congress ended up gaining victory in 30 wards. 
    • The remaining 10 wards were won by others, including independent candidates.
  • Policemen in Haryana's Rohtak district will now work with cameras fitted on their bodies that will record their activities of the entire day. 
    • The pilot initiative has been taken to increase the city's surveillance and help police in monitoring accidents and incidents of crime. 
  • The government has announced the names of 10 new Iconic places under the Phase II of Swachh Iconic Places initiative
    • Swachh Iconic Places (SIP) is an initiative of Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation under Swachh Bharat Mission. 
    • The 10 new iconic places are :
      • Adi Shankaracharya’s abode Kaladi in Ernakulam
      • Baijnath Dham (Devghar)
      • Char Minar (Hyderabad),
      • Church and Convent of St. Francis of Assissi (Goa),
      • Gangotri
      • Gaya Tirth (Bihar)
      • Gomateshwar in Shravanbelgola
      • Mahakaleshwar Temple (Ujjain)
      • Somnath temple in Gujarat
      • Yamunotri
New Appointments
  • The government of Kazakhstan has appointed the Chairman of Kirtilals Jewellers Suraj Shantakumar as its Honorary Consul for the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala.
  • Israel today appointed Hana Khatib as it's first female judge, in its Muslim sharia court system. 
Science & Technology
  • NASA's Cassini spacecraft, launched in 1997, today became the first man-made object to go beyond Saturn's innermost rings towards the planet. 
    • Cassini will perform 22 orbits between the 2,400-km-gap, sampling ring particles while ending its mission on September 15, 2017. 
    • On the final orbit, Cassini will plunge into Saturn's atmosphere, sending back detailed images of the planet's surface to Earth.
  • China has launched its first domestically built aircraft carrier, which will join an existing warship bought from Ukraine. 
    • This comes amid increasing tensions between the US and North Korea over the latter's nuclear and missile programs.
Awards & Honors
  • India's youngest ever chancellor of any university, Dileep K Nair, has received Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Foundation Kerala State award for the year 2016-17 for his excellent performance in the field of education. 
    • The 38-year-old academician, who is currently the Chancellor of the NEFTU in Arunachal Pradesh, was conferred with the award by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien.
  • Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd (GNFC) has won the prestigious Golden Globe Tigers Award for Excellence and Leadership in CSR for the year 2017 in the category of ‘E-Payment Leadership’. 
    • Note : This is the second award for GNFC in this category. It has already won the Golden Peacock Award for its cashless innovation.

Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian shot putter Manpreet Kaur became world number one after winning the Gold medal at the Asian Grand Prix in China today. 
    • Note : India won a total of seven medals, including four silver and two bronze, with silvers in javelin, athletics and long jump.
