Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "A battle lost ?"

  • Scotch - to prevent something from being believed or being done
  • The status quo - the present situation
  • Progressive - supporting social and political change that aims to make a system fairer
  • Endeavour - an attempt to do something
  • Yield - to supply or produce something positive such as a profit, an amount of food or information
  • Eenthusiastic - very interested in something or excited by it
  • Reactionary - strongly opposed to any social or political change
  • Embark on something - to start something new or important
  • Resistance -  the ability not to be affected or harmed by something
  • Stepped down - to leave an official position or job
  • Urban - of or in a city or town
  • In accordance with - following or obeying a rule, law, wish, etc

  • Rapid - fast or sudden
  • Countervailing - having equal force but an opposite effect
  • Offset - to balance the effect of something, with the result that there is no advantage or disadvantage
  • Relatively - in comparison with someone or something similar
  • Policymaker - a member of a government department, legislature, or other organization who is responsible for making new rules, laws, etc
  • Elderly - old people
  • Cohort - a friend or supporter, especially of someone you do not like
  • Enormous - extremely large
  • Tailored - made or changed especially to be suitable for a particular situation or purpose
  • Unprecedented - never having happened or existed in the past
  • Dramatic - very sudden or noticeable
  • Regime - a system of rules that control something
  • Attuned - able to understand or recognize something
  • Palliative - a drug or medical treatment that reduces pain without curing the cause of the pain
  • Communicable - able to be given from one person to another
  • Preventive - intended to stop something before it happens
  • Curative - used for curing an illness
  • Rehabilitative - to help someone who has been ill to return to a healthy life
  • Aspect - one part of a situation, problem, subject, etc
  • Advocacy - strong public support for something
  • Campaign - a planned group of especially political, business, or military activities that are intended to achieve a particular aim
  • Stability - a situation in which things happen as they should and there are no harmful changes
  • Dignity - the importance and value that a person has, that makes other people respect them or makes them respect themselves
  • Twilight - the final part of a period
  • Abandonment - to leave someone when you should stay with them and look after them
  • Destitution - the state of having no money or possessions
  • Homelessness - without a place to live
  • Revolve around - to have something as the main or most important interest or subject
  • Workforce - the group of people who work in a company, industry, country, etc
  • Emigrate - to leave a country permanently and go to live in another one
  • Abroad - in or to a foreign country or countries
