International Current Affairs

• Today (2nd February) is World Wetlands Day.
• This Day is celebrated to raise public awareness about the importance and value of wetlands.
• On this date in the year 1971, the Convention on Wetlands, known as the Ramsar Convention, was adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar, drawing attention to the importance of wetlands. 
• Theme of World Wetlands Day 2017 :  “Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction”
• The UK Parliament's House of Commons today voted in favour of a bill to allow the government to start Britain's exit process from the European Union (BREXIT). 
• This comes after UK's Supreme Court ruled the government must hold a vote in the Parliament before starting the divorce talks.
  
• Chewing gum is banned in Singapore to stop people from littering public places with chewing-gum litter.
• The ban is imposed on importing, selling or manufacturing chewing gum.
• However, certain chewing gums that have medical benefits are allowed.

National Current Affairs

• The Centre today approved an investment of Rs 1,350 crore to Andhra Pradesh for improvement of basic urban infrastructure under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) over the next three fiscals.
• The Union Urban Development Ministry also approved Rs 405 crore in support of investments in projects for augmenting water supply, sewerage networks, drainage and provision of parks and open spaces in 32 Atal Mission cities in the southern state.
• Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has inaugurated the prestigious 9th Bengaluru International FilmFestival by lighting the lamp.
• 200 films, 15 screens and 15 sections are part of this festival.
• The history of Kannada cinema, culture and art is screened at this inaugural function.
• ‘Laa Vache’ (Man and his cow) directed by Mohammad Amidi in Algeria language was the inaugural film.

Business & Economic Affairs

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that it has not authorized dealings in or use of Bitcoin or any other virtual currency. 
• Any user dealing with virtual currencies will be doing so at their own risk, it added. 
• People investing in virtual currencies are exposing themselves to potential financial, legal, and security-related risks, it further cautioned.
• Elon Musk-led electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors dropped the word 'Motors' from its name after acquiring a solar panel-making company SolarCity in a deal worth $2 billion last year.
• ICICI Bank has allowed its customers to process UPI transactions via Flipkart-owned digital wallet app PhonePe. 
• Transactions through PhonePe were blocked by the bank accusing it of "restrictive practice" by allowing payments only through its own UPI handle.

New Appointments

• US President Donald Trump today nominated conservative judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, fulfilling his campaign promise to appoint a conservative justice to replace Antonin Scalia. 
• The 49-year-old is the youngest nominee to the nation's highest court in more than 25 years.
• Former ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson has been confirmed as US President Donald Trump's Secretary of State.
• Ride-hailing startup Uber today announced the appointment of former BSE CEO and Tata Group official Madhu Kannan as its Chief Business Officer, India and Emerging Markets. 
• Kannan has previously worked as the Managing Director at Merrill Lynch and NYSE Group. 
• Note : was the youngest CEO of any of the world's major stock exchanges.

Books & Authors

• Author George RR Martin (original author of the TV series  Game of Thrones) has revealed that a new short story titled 'The Sons of the Dragon' will be published in fantasy anthology 'The Book of Swords' on October 10. 
• The story will revolve around the reigns of the second and third Targaryen kings.
• Other authors featured in the anthology are Robin Hobb, Ken Liu, Garth Nix and Scott Lynch.

Sports Current Affairs

• The Sports Ministry received a hike of ₹350 crore in the Union Budget, presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday. 
• Jaitley allocated a total of ₹1,943 crore to sports, compared to the ₹1,592 crore given last year.
• Chelsea and England legend Frank Lampard ended his 21-year professional football career after announcing his retirement today.
• The 38-year-old, who scored a club-record 211 goals for Chelsea, won a Champions League title alongside winning three Premier League titles with the Blues.
• The medals for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be forged from recycled metal from old mobile phones and appliances donated by the general public to give them a sense of direct involvement in the Game.
• Lakshya Sen, a 15-year-old shuttler from Dehradun, is badminton's top-ranked junior player in the world. 
• Lakshya became the youngest winner of the All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament in September last year.
• Amit Mishra, after picking up his 201st T20 wicket in the Bengaluru T20I, became India's highest wicket taker in T20 cricket, overtaking Ravichandran Ashwin's record of 200 wickets.
