International Current Affairs
  • Today (Last Day of February) is Rare Disease Day.
    • This day aims to raise awareness about relatively unknown diseases and their impact. 
    • Started as a European event, over 80 countries across the world have joined the campaign. 
    • Note : According to the World Health Organisation, a disease found in less than 6.5-10 people per 10,000 people is defined as rare.
    • Theme of Rare Disease Day 2017 : research
  • World Bank CEO Kristalina Georgieva is on the official visit to India.
    • This is her first official visit.
    • During this visit, she will meet senior policy makers and inspect projects assisted by the multilateral agency. 
    • She is scheduled to meet Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and RBI Governor Urjit Patel. 
    • In Mumbai, she will also visit the operations of the World Bank-supported suburban rail system and a school serving low-income households.
    • She will be accompanied by Annette Dixon, World Bank Vice President for South Asia.
  • Queen Elizabeth II today hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace to launch the UK-India Year of Culture 2017 
    • Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is representing the Indian government. 
    • Former cricketer Kapil Dev, musician Anoushka Shankar and actors Kamal Hassan and Kunal Nayyar were also present.
  • US President Donald Trump's administration is considering to withdraw the country's participation from the UN Human Rights Council over its alleged inefficiencies and anti-Israel behaviour. 
  • Hungary has started building the second fence along its border with Serbia to stop migrants from freely entering the country. 
    • The decision has been criticised by human rights groups. 
    • Hungary earlier built a border fence at its borders with Serbia and Croatia in 2015.

  • Today (28th February 2016)  is National Science Day.
    • On this day, the nation pays tributes to the legacy of the great scientist, Dr C V Raman, who brought Nobel Prize in Science to Asia and India for the first time for his ground-breaking achievement of the Raman effect.
    • Professor Raman disclosed this discovery to the world on 28th of February, 1928 and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930.
    • In 1986, The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) had urged the Indian government to declare February 28 as National Science Day.
    • Theme of National Science Day 2017 : ‘Science and Technology for Specially Abled Persons’ 
  • Thiruvananthapuram has been ranked first among the 21 Indian cities that were tested on urban governance parameters, according to the latest survey by Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy. 
    • Pune and Kolkata were respectively ranked second and third in the survey. 
    • Mumbai bagged the fourth spot while Delhi was ninth in the list. 
    • Chandigarh was ranked the lowest.
  • Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju today inaugurated India’s first integrated heliport in Rohini, New Delhi
    • The ₹100-crore project, built by Pawan Hans Limited, will feature nine parking bays, and an air-conditioned passenger terminal which can hold up to 150 people. 
    • The heliport is expected to reduce congestion at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
  • India's largest paramilitary force, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), has been rendered without a regular chief after its Director General (DG) K Durga Prasad retired without a successor being named. 
    • However, the Home Ministry has issued an order giving CRPF Additional DG Sudeep Lakhtakia an additional charge of the post of DG till the appointment of a regular successor.

  • Former Indian women's cricketer Shantha Rangaswamy has become the 1st female cricketer to be nominated for the BCCI Lifetime Achievement Award
    • Rangaswamy will receive the award at the BCCI Annual Awards 2016-17 on March 8. 
    • Note : She was the first Indian women's cricket team captain and the first woman cricketer to win the Arjuna Award.
Science & Technology
  • INS Viraat, the second aircraft carrier in the Indian naval fleet, will be decommissioned on March 6, Vice Admiral Girish Luthra announced today. 
    • Important Points to Note about INS Viraat
    • INS Viraat holds a Guinness world record for being the oldest surviving aircraft carrier. 
    • It was first commissioned in the Indian Navy in 1987 after serving the United Kingdom's Royal Navy for 27 years.
  • The Indian Air Force is preparing a security web with the Israeli SPYDER air defence missile system on the borders with Pakistan to tackle any aircraft, cruise missile or drone that tries to violate Indian airspace. 
    • SPYDER is a low-level, quick reaction missile to neutralise hostile targets up to 15 km away and at heights between 20 and 9,000 metres.
  • NASA has kick-started a study to understand the feasibility of manned missions into deep space, farther than the Moon. 
    • With an aim to launch two astronauts by mid-2019 in a 70,000-km-orbit around the Moon, the study will assess the pros and cons of adding crew to a deep space mission, giving critical insights on future manned missions to Mars.
New Appointments
  • The Ministry of External Affairs has appointed the 1992 batch Indian Foreign Service officer Gopal Baglay as the new MEA Spokesperson
    • He has replaced Vikas Swarup, who has been appointed as the Indian High Commissioner to Canada. 
  • The Spanish government has appointed a 'Sex Tsar' to combat Spain's falling birth rate. 
    • Senator and demographics expert Edelmira Diz, has been appointed as, is tasked with drafting a strategy against imbalances and identifying the reason behind the declining birth rate.
    • Note :  In 2016, Spain reported more deaths than births for the first time since World War II.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian shuttlers Tarun Kona and Alwin Francis have today won the Men's doubles title (Gold) at the 2017 Uganda International Series today. 
  • India's Jitu Rai won the Bronze medal in the men's 10-metre air pistol event at the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup in New Delhi today. 
    • Important Note : Earlier, Jitu had won the gold medal in the 10-metre air pistol mixed event alongside Heena Sidhu.
  • Indian shooter Ankur Mittal won silver in the men's Double Trap event at the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi today. 
  • Military teams from around the globe are participating in the World Winter Games being held in the southern Russian city of Sochi.
    • International Military Sports Council, which is among the world's largest sporting committees, is organising the games. 
    • Over 400 military athletes from 26 countries will compete in seven disciplines, which include the biathlon, alpine skiing and indoor climbing.

  • Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Indonesian President Joko Widodo have jointly agreed to restore full military cooperation between the two countries
    • Note : Indonesia's military had suspended military cooperation in January after finding material insulting Indonesia's founding principles at an Australian base. Australia and Indonesia are also in economic partnership talks to cut tariffs and promote trade.
  • 'Clicktivism' (a word for armchair activists on social media), 'otherize' (viewing a group of people as intrinsically different from oneself) and 'haterade' (excessive criticism) are among the new additions to oxforddictionaries.com. 
    • Note : The words emerged during the US Presidential elections.

National Current Affairs

  • Nation paying tribute to martyr Chandrashekhar Azad (23rd July 1906 – 27th February 1931)  on his 87th Death Anniversary today.
    • He was a great Indian freedom fighter who was involved in Kakori Train Robbery, the attempt to blow up the Viceroy's train, and the shooting of Saunders at Lahore to avenge the killing of Lala Lajpat Rai.
    • He was the mentor of Bhagat Singh, another great freedom fighter.
    • After the independence, to commemorate Chandra Shekhar Azad, Alfred Park (Allahabad), where Chandra Shekhar Azad shot himself was renamed Chandra Shekhar Azad Park.

  • Venezuela and Libya were suspended from voting in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the 2016-17 session for not paying dues to the world body. 
    • This is for the 2nd time in two years both countries have been suspended. 
    • Besides them other four other countries Papua New Guinea, Sudan, Vanuatu and Cabo Verde also may lose their voting rights for not paying their in past two years .
  • Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir has made a rare visit to Iraq, meeting PM Haider al-Abadi.
    • It is the first visit of a senior Saudi minister since the US overthrew Saddam Hussein in 2003.
  • The Mexican government today announced that it would not accept US deportees from third countries under any circumstances. 
    • US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly had asked Mexican officials during their Thursday visit if they would host deportees. 
    • Note : Most of the immigrants crossing the US-Mexico border in recent years have been Central Americans.

  • Indonesian President Joko Widodo has arrived in Sydney on his first visit to Australia as his nation’s leader.
    • Improving trade and investment will be a key focus of Jokowi’s two-day state visit with plans to finalize a bilateral free trade agreement this year.
  • Germany's Environment Ministry has banned meat and fish products at official functions, calling it a "matter of credibility" and citing a need to "to practise what we preach". 
  • US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to curb regulations and help businesses
    • The measure directs federal agencies to create "regulatory reform" task forces which will evaluate federal rules and recommend whether to keep, repeal or change them. 
  • Arizona Senate has approved a bill that expands police power to arrest anyone involved in a protest that is likely to turn bad. 
    • The measure would allow prosecutors to seize a person's assets while imposing additional criminal charges. 
    • Under the law, participating in or helping organise a demonstration that turns into a riot will be seen as an offence.

  • Sikkim became 22nd state in the country to join Union Government’s Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY)
    • In this regard, Central Government and the state government have signed MoU for operational improvement of Sikkim’s Power Distribution Department.

  • To shore up bilateral ties, the 1st Strategic Dialogue between India and China was recently held at Beijing (capital of China). 
    • The meeting was co-chaired by India’s Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and China’s Executive Vice Foreign minister Zhang Yesui.
  • The Afghan practice of 'bacha bazi', which involves the sexual enslavement of boys, is set to be criminalised for the first time.
  • A new round of United Nations-sponsored peace talks aimed at resolving the Syrian conflict has started in Geneva
    • This comes after the Astana talks ushered in a fragile ceasefire. 
    • The rebels are expected to feature in a "greater role" in this round of talks. 
    • Note : The last round of Geneva talks ended nine months ago after an escalation in hostilities.
  • Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito marked his 57th birthday today by announcing that he is ready to become emperor after the expected abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito. 
    • Note : The Japanese government is considering steps on how to allow the 83-year-old Akihito, who wants to step down due to old age and illness, to abdicate as existing laws don't allow it.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval for signing of an Agreement between India and Poland on cooperation in the field of agriculture and allied sectors.
  • The cabinet also approved the signing of Air Services Agreement (ASA) between India and Greece
    • The delegations both countries in September 2016 had finalized the text of ASA. 
    • The agreement is as per latest International Civil Aviation.

National Current Affairs

  • Today (24th February) is Central Excise Day
    • This day is observed to  encourage the employees of excise department to carry out the central excise duty all over the India in better way in order to prevent the corruption in goods manufacturing business as well as implement other rules to carry out best possible excise services.
  • The week-long Brahan Natyanjali, a dance obeisance to Lord Bragadeesvarar, began today on Mahashivarathri at the Big Temple in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. 
    • Over 600 artistes from around the world are taking part in the festival, which is being organised by the Brahan Natyanjali Foundation. 
    • Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Mohiniyattam  and Kuchipudi are being performed during Brahan Natyanjali.

  • Today (23rd February) is World Rotary Day.
  • The UK government and the European Union have pledged £170 million (around ₹1,400 crore) aid to South Sudan following the declaration of the world's first famine since 2011. 
    • This came after warnings by the UN that about 40% of South Sudan's population is in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and people are already dying from hunger caused by famine.

  • The Union Ministry of Textiles and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment have signed an MoU to set up interventions for the welfare and economic development of scheduled caste artisans. 
    • This MoU was signed between Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles and National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation (NSFDC), a CPSU under Ministry of Social Justice.
National Current Affairs
  • The Gujarat Assembly has passed Gujarat Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Bill, 2017
    • This bill seeks to empower the state government to use Aadhaar number as the sole identifier for the delivery of various subsidies and benefits in an effective and targeted manner.
  • One of the significant biodiversity mega events of India, the National Biodiversity Congress (NBC) 2017 was recently held at Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala). 
    • The event is hosted by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board. 
    • The main aim of the event is to identify practical, evidence-based case studies at the regional level to support the plan of action.

  • The 9th BRICS Summit's first Sherpas Meeting will be held in Nanjing (Capital city of Jiangsu province of People's Republic of China), from tomorrow.
    • The 2-day meeting will attract more than 100 participants, including coordinators from all sides, foreign diplomats, and representatives from the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB).
    • Important Points to Note
      • The Sherpas Meeting, as a major channel to push forward BRICS cooperation, aims at political preparation for the leaders' meeting.
      • It is also routine for the BRICS chairmanship to hold several Sherpas Meetings before the summit.
      • The 9th BRICS Summit will be held in Xiamen in southeast China's Fujian Province.
  • Pakistan's top Shariat court has legalised using 'test tube baby' method of conceiving for married couples with medical complications. 
    • It is lawful only if the sperm belongs to the actual father and the egg of the actual mother and the child is born by the actual mother, the court added. 
    • The court further declared the practice of surrogacy as "un-Islamic".
  • Turkey's army is lifting a historic ban on female officers wearing the Islamic headscarf in the officially secular country.
    • This move applies to female officers working in general staff, command headquarters and branches. 
  • Canada's second most populous city Montreal has voted unanimously on a legislation to declare itself a sanctuary city to allow undocumented immigrants access to city-funded services such as shelters, housing and food banks.

    • February 21 was specifically chosen to mark the day in 1952 when students demonstrated for recognition of their language, Bangla as a national language in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).

  • According to a latest report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India has been the world's largest importer of major arms in the last five years.
    • India, which received most of its arms from Russia, accounted for 13% of the total global arms import between 2012-16. 
    • Note : SIPRI also revealed that the US was the top arms exporter.

    • His two-nation tour also seeks to broaden India's diplomatic footprint in Sub-Saharan Africa. 
    • Note : This is the first high-level visit from India to Rwanda
  • Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the launch of military operations to retake west Mosul from the Islamic State group today, four months into a massive offensive on the city.
  • South Asian Speakers’ Summit ended today in Indore.
    • This summit was inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan yesterday.
    • This summit was attended by presiding officers and delegates from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Nepal.
    • It was concluded with the adoption of an 'Indore Declaration' - laying down the outcome of the discussions and action points agreed upon by the participants - at a closing ceremony today.    
  • India has sanctioned a soft loan of 340 million US dollars to Nepal for various infrastructure development programmes.
    • Indian Ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae handed over the approval papers to Physical Infrastructure and Transport Minister of Nepal Ramesh Lekhak in the presence of Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.
    • Note : Under this programme Mahalaki bridge and 15 roads will be constructed in various parts of Nepal.

  • Finland's Parliament today confirmed same-sex marriage law after members voted down a petition seeking to repeal the law.

    • During his stay, he will deliver key note address at the opening session of Nepal Infrastructure Summit 2017 organised by Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI).

    • The city, reportedly the size of Chicago, will have a population of 6 lakh.
  • India and Nepal have agreed to build new cross-border power transmission lines during their fourth bilateral meeting on power cooperation.
    • The transmission lines will help in distribution of electricity from upcoming power projects in Nepal. 
    • India also expressed readiness to train Nepalese engineers and consider new letters of credit for building infrastructure in Nepal.
  • India was ranked 143rd out of 186 economies in the annual Index of Economic Freedom 2017 which measures the degree of economic freedom in the countries of the world. 
    • The index was released by top US based Think Tank, The Heritage Foundation.

  • US President Donald Trump today lifted anti-corruption rules which forced oil companies to disclose payments made to foreign governments to secure mining and drilling rights. 
    • The regulations were a part of financial reforms passed by the Barack Obama administration after the 2008 financial crisis. 
    • The oil industry had opposed the rules claiming they gave global rivals a competitive edge.

  • Delhi Police today celebrated its 70th Raising Day with a ceremonial march at Kingsway Camp in New Delhi. 
    • Note : February 16 is celebrated as the Raising Day to commemorate the day DW Mehra was appointed as Delhi's first Inspector General in 1948. 
  • The Bihar Cabinet today passed a proposed amendment to the state service rules forbidding government employees from consuming alcohol anywhere in the state. 
    • The service rules earlier prohibited government servants from consuming alcohol or any other intoxicant at workplace only. 
    • Note : This comes after the Bihar government imposed a liquor-ban policy across the state in April last year.

  • India has joined an UN network to halve maternal, newborn deaths.
    • The Network for Improving Quality of Care for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health is a global health network focused on improving the quality of care for new mothers and babies. 
    • The network is supported by World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and other partners. 
    • With this, India has became the 9th country to join this network. 
    • Other contries in the network are Bangladesh, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda. 
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) today made history by successfully launcheing 104 satellites in one go
    • Its PSLV launch system carried a 714-kg Cartosat-2 series earth observing satellite and 103 co-passenger satellites together weighing about 664 kg. 
    • With this, ISRO has broke the world record for the most number of satellites launched from a single rocket. 
    • Russia held the previous record of 37 satellites, launched in 2014.

  • Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today inaugurated the 11th biennial edition of International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition and declared the Aero India 2017 open at Air Force Station, Yelahanka in Bengaluru. 
    • Highlights of this Event
    • This edition of Aero India, for the first time, combines the defence and civil aviation
      segments
      into a holistic event with the co involvement of the defence and civil aviation ministries in the event.  
    • This exhibition sees the participation of 549 companies with 53 Aircraft gracing the event. 
    • The total area of the show has grown from 24,403 sqm to 27,678 sqm this year. 
    • The gross area has also increased from 2,50,000 sqm to 2,60,000 sqm.

    • The day is observed every year on the 13 of February to celebrate radio as a forum for entertainment and information, as a bridge of communication for remote communities and its role in empowering people.
    • This day marks the first broadcast by UN radio in 1946.
    • It was proclaimed on 3 November 2011 by UNESCO's 36th General Conference.
    • It was originally proposed by the Kingdom of Spain.
    • First world radio day was observed in the year 2012.
    • Theme of the year 2017 : “Radio is You”
  • India is planning to host a conference on counter-radicalisation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in October 2017.
    • This conference will provide common platform to countries for sharing experiences and ideas on prevention of radicalisation amid rise of Islamic State and other extremist ideologies.
  • The Islamabad High Court in Pakistan has banned Valentine's Day celebrations across the country after accepting a petition which called it un-Islamic. 
    • The court also ordered print and electronic media to stop promoting Valentine's Day immediately.

  • The Pakistan Navy has kicked of its biannually-held multinational AMAN 2017 naval exercise in Karachi, Pakistan. 
    • This is the fifth edition such exercise which Pakistan has been holding biannually since 2007. 
    • 37 countries are participating in this event.

  • India ranked low 43rd among the surveyed 45 nations in 2017 International Intellectual Property Index (IIPI).

National Current Affairs
  • The 2-day UNESCO Natural Heritage Festival began today at the Great Himalayan National Park in Sai Ropa, Himachal Pradesh
    • The festival will feature a media workshop on environmental journalism, discussions on natural and cultural heritage of the Himalayan region and a heritage walk. 
    • Note : GHNP was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
  • After launching the Android version of the mobile payments app BHIM in December 2016, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) today released the application on iOS devices
    • The app has a limit of ₹10,000 per transaction and ₹20,000 in a day for transfers through a bank account. 
    • Features of the app include Pay to Aadhaar number and SPAM report.
  • The Indian Railways has claimed that it has conducted the world's largest online examination with nearly 92 lakh candidates, to fill more than 18,000 vacancies in various categories.
  • February 14 will be celebrated as 'Matru Pitru Diwas' (parents' day) at all schools in Chhattisgarh to teach "Indian culture" to students, the BJP government announced today.
  • The Centre is going to make all ration shops under the public distribution system Aadhaar-enabled by June 30, IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced today. 
    • Claiming that ration cards in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan have been made Aadhaar-enabled, Prasad added that 20 lakh Aadhaar-enabled point of sales (PoS) machines for delivery of rations will be rolled out soon.
  • All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will conduct a single exam for engineering and architecture from 2018
    • At present, many states conduct their own engineering examination or admissions are done on the basis of Class 12 marks. 
    • Further, students seeking admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will have to clear the JEE-Advanced after taking the engineering entrance exam.
  • The Karnataka government tabled a bill in the Assembly to facilitate traditional buffalo race 'Kambala' and bullock cart races. 
    • The proposed legislation seeks to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act in its application to Karnataka. 
    • This comes after the Tamil Nadu government passed a law to overturn a Supreme Court-imposed ban on traditional bull-taming sport Jallikattu.
  • The Union Government is planning to set up a Defence Procurement Organisation (DPO), new procurement body to integrate and streamline the long and arduous process of defence acquisitions. 
    • The DPO will be a vertical under the Union Defence Ministry. 
    • It will simplify the defence purchase procedure by integrating procurement processes.
Science & Technology
  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will carry a record 104 satellites in a single mission on February 15 from its space centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. 
    • In the launch, ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle will carry Cartosat-2 series satellite for earth observation and 103 other co-passenger satellites. 
    • Note : Of the 103 satellites, 101 of them are nano-satellites.
  • India today successfully test-fired its Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor missile dubbed as Ashwin from launching complex-IV of Dhamara Abdul Kalam defence base off Odisha coast. 
    • The test assed missile’s killing capability by intercepting a target, mimicking an incoming enemy missile in mid-air. 
    • The success of test has boosted India’s position in the exclusive club of AAD countries United States, Russia and Israel.
Deaths
  • Sir Peter Mansfield (83), known for pioneering body scanning technique Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), passed away.
    • He was awarded 'The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2003', for discoveries concerning the MRI.
New Appointments
  • The government today appointed senior IAS officer Ajay Tyagi as the Chairman of markets regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).  
    • He will replace UK Sinha, whose extended tenure ends on March 1, 2017.
    • Tyagi is currently Additional Secretary (Investment) in the Department of Economic Affairs and handles capital markets, among other responsibilities.
Awards & Honors
  • Transgender model Martina Robledo will be the first ever transgender person to serve as a 'trophy handler', the people who bring the trophies on stage, at the upcoming Grammy Awards. 
    • The ability to present a trophy has nothing to do with one's gender," said the president of the Recording Academy.
  • Veteran fashion designer Manish Arora has been invited to represent India at a special reception held at London's Buckingham Palace
    • The reception will be held to mark the beginning of the UK-India Year of Culture.
  • Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has set a Guinness World Record by building the world's tallest sand castle, which stood 48 feet and 8 inches tall. 
    • Pattnaik broke the previous record of 45 feet and 10 inches, which was created at Miami beach, US in 2005.

Sports Current Affairs
  • Former Argentine player Diego Maradona has been given an ambassadorial role by football governing body FIFA.
  • NBA has become the world's first sports league to have its own eSports league, which will debut in 2018
    • The gaming league will have the same schedule as the regular season, with existing NBA teams running their online counterparts.
    • The league will be a global competition, with teams having the option to sign players who don't participate in the draft.
  • Nepal opener Padam Bahadur Badaila scored a double century in the ongoing Blind Cricket World Cup during the team's match against New Zealand in Karnataka today.
    • Nepal won the match by 141 runs but finished eighth in the tournament.

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved 'Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan' (PMGDISHA) to make 6 crore rural households digitally literate. 
    • This is expected to be one of the largest digital literacy programmes in the world. 
    • The outlay for this project is Rs.2,351.38 crore to usher in digital literacy in rural India by March,.2019.
    • This approval comes in line with the announcement made by Union Finance Minister in the Union Budget 2016-17.
