National Current Affairs
- Indian city Bengaluru has emerged as the most dynamic city in the world (according to recently released annual by Jones Lang LaSalle’s City Momentum Index).
- Another Indian city Hyderabad stood at 5th place in the index.
- Top 10 cities in 2017 CMI :
- India's indigenous Light Combat Aircraft 'Tejas' will make its debut by flying past the Rajpath on the country's 67th Republic Day this year.
- Indigenously made helicopters Rudra and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Dhruv will also showcase a fly-past on January 26.
- Note : The last time any indigenous airfare flew on Republic Day was 1960s-built HAL Marut in the 1980s.
- The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly today unanimously passed a resolution for creating a conducive atmosphere for the return of Kashmiri Pandits and other minorities.
- Note : Kashmiri Pandits, Sikhs and some Muslims were forced to migrate 27 years ago due to unfortunate circumstances.
- Supreme Court has today stated that divorce granted by ecclesiastical tribunal under Christian personal law are not valid as it cannot override the law.
- The Union HRD Minister Shri Prakash Javadekar launched a dedicated web portal ‘ShaGun’ for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan at New Delhi today.
- ‘ShaGun’ aims to capture and showcase innovations and progress in Elementary Education sector of India by continuous monitoring of the flagship scheme - Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
- Days after Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis activated 500 WiFi hotspots in Mumbai, the state government is set to launch a mobile app to help citizens find the nearest hotspot.
- The app, called Aaple Sarkar Mum WiFi, will be launched next week.
- It was developed by Maharashtra Information Technology Corporation and can be downloaded for free.
Business & Economic Affairs
- The I-T department has asked banks to report deposits in any account worth ₹10 lakh in a year.
- It also asked banks to report cash payments of ₹1 lakh or more on credit card bills.
- It further reiterated banks should report deposits of ₹2.5 lakh or more made by a person during November 9 to December 30, 2016.
- Cabinet approves Rs. 10,000-crore incentive for electronic manufacturing by March 2018.
- It will help moving towards the goal of 'Net Zero imports' in electronics by 2020.
- IT Minister : Ravishankar Prasad
- Gujarat government today announced salary hike (ranging between 63% to124%) of its fixed pay employees as per the Minimum Wages recommended by 7th pay commission.
- The decision will be implemented from the 1st February and will benefit over 1 lakh 18 thousand employees working in different cadres at fix pay.
Science & Technology
- The world's first computer virus for an IBM computer, called 'Brain', was released 31 years ago on this day (19th January) in the year 1986.
- Brain was created by Basit and Amjad Farooq Alvi from Lahore, Pakistan.
- The virus, which was transmitted through floppy disks, installed itself into a computer's memory, from where it infected new floppies as they were inserted.
Awards & Honors
- Indian actress Priyanka Chopra has won the favourite dramatic TV actress trophy for her role in "Quantico" at the 2017 People's Choice Awards.
- Another Indian-origin star Lilly Singh was also named as favourite YouTube star.
- American actress and comedienne Ellen DeGeneres became the most awarded person in the history of People's Choice Awards, after winning three awards at the ceremony.
Sports Current Affairs
- English Premier League side Manchester United became the world's richest football club, with a record revenue of over ₹4,300 crore for the 2015-16 season.
