International Current Affairs
- The Beipanjiang Bridge in southwest China is now open to traffic.
- It is the highest bridge in the world at 1,854 feet.
- The 1,341-metre-long bridge, soars over a river and connects the Guizhou and Yunnan mountainous provinces.
- Colombian lawmakers have approved an amnesty law to protect Marxist FARC rebels from prosecution for minor crimes committed during the country's 52-year civil war.
- The law is one of the contentious parts of a peace deal signed between the government and rebel forces, and will not pardon people who have been accused of human rights violations or war crimes.
Banking & Economic Affairs
- 50-day deadline to deposit old 500 and 1000 rupee notes in banks ends today.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched a mobile payments application called BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money), in the honour of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar.
- Compatible with all Android phones, the app has a maximum limit of ₹10,000 per transaction and ₹20,000 within 24 hours.
- E-commerce major Amazon has launched a new platform named 'Sell as Individual' that lets users sell used goods in their city on paying a fixed amount of fee.
- Currently being operated in Bengaluru, users need to share pictures and details of the products on Amazon's website and the company will provide doorstep pick-up, packing, and delivery of their goods.
- Technology major Apple will reportedly start manufacturing or assembling iPhones in Bengaluru from April 2017.
- Manufacturing locally will make Apple products cheaper in India and help the company open retail stores in the country, where products are currently sold through resellers.
- National capital Delhi has registered the highest per capita income among all states and union territories of the country, during 2015-16 at about ₹2,80,000.
- Delhi's per capita income is over three times the national average.
- It is followed by Chandigarh and Sikkim with per capita incomes of ₹2,42,386 and ₹2,27,465, respectively.
Awards & Honors
- A newly discovered Hawaiian coral reef fish has become the 9th creature to be named after US President Barack Obama.
- Identified as Tosanoides obama, the fish was discovered during an expedition inside Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii.
- Apart from the fish, the US President also has a spider, a lizard and a bird named after him.
Books & Authors
- Filmmaker Karan Johar will launch his biography, 'An Unsuitable Boy', in January 2017.
- Co-authored by Karan and Poonam Saxena, it will be published by Penguin Random House.
New Appointments
- The Defence Ministry today appointed Navy Chief Sunil Lanba as the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff committee (COSC).
- The COSC post is given to the senior-most of the service chiefs.
- Lanba received the baton from the outgoing Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha in a ceremony at Defence Ministry in New Delhi.
