Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "The big deal with Japan"

  • Big deal - something that is very important
  • Froze - to pause / stop something
  • Sanction - an official order, such as the stopping of trade, that is taken against a country in order to make it obey international law
  • Thaw - to become more friendly
  • Strategic - carefully planned in order to achieve a particular goal, especially in war, business, or politics
  • Dialogue - formal talks between opposing countries, political groups, etc
  • Fruition - an occasion when a plan or an idea begins to happen, exist, or be successful
  • Renewable energy - energy, that can be produced as quickly as it is used
  • Cutting-edge - the most modern stage of development in a particular type of work or activity
  • Significant - important or noticeable
  • Negotiating - to have formal discussions with someone in order to reach an agreement with them
  • Signatory - a person or organization that has signed an official agreement
  • Proliferation - a sudden increase in number or amount
  • Treaty - a written agreement between two or more countries, formally approved and signed by their leaders
  • Exemplary - very good and suitable to be copied by other people
  • Prudence - the state of being careful in the way you make decisions or spend money so that you avoid unnecessary risks
  • Strives - to try very hard to do something or to make something happen
  • Meagre - very small or not enough
  • Bilateral - involving two groups or countries
  • Rosy - if a situation is described as rosy, it gives hope of success or happiness
  • Prognosis - a statement about what is likely to happen in a particular situation
  • Criticism - the act of saying that something or someone is bad
  • Extract - to remove or take out something
  • Assurances - promises
  • The clock is ticking - used for saying that someone must do something quickly because there will soon be no more time left
  • Coincide - to happen at or near the same time
  • Plenary - a plenary meeting is one at which all the members of a group or organization are present
  • Wary - careful or nervous about someone or something because you think they might cause a problem
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Ties - relations
  • Rivals - people / organization who compete with another
  • President-elect - someone who has been elected president but has not officially started the position yet

  • Defiance - behaviour in which you refuse to obey someone or something
  • Termination -  the end of an agreement, job, or situation
  • Predictably - happening in a way that you would expect
  • Defiant - refusing to obey a person or rule
  • Deny - to refuse
  • Neighbouring - near each other
  • Determined - not willing to let anything prevent you from doing what you have decided to do
  • Protest - a strong complaint expressing disagreement, disapproval, or opposition
  • Absurd - stupid and unreasonable
  • Obviously - in a way that is clear for almost anyone to see or understand
  • Emotive - causing strong feelings
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Strategist - someone who develops and carries out a plan, especially a business, military, or political plan
  • At odds - disagreeing with someone
  • Upped the ante - if you up the ante, you increase your demands or the risks in a situation in order to achieve a better result
  • Shepherd - guide or direct in a particular direction
  • Refrained - to avoid doing or stop yourself from doing something
  • Uproot - to pull a plant / tree including its roots out of the ground
  • Advisory - for the purpose of giving advice
  • Presumably - used for saying that you think something is true based on what you know, although you are not really certain
  • All-or-nothing - involving either the whole of something or none of it
  • Scrambled - mixed
  • Alliance - a group of countries, political parties, or people who have agreed to work together because of shared interests or aims
  • Versus - used to say that one team or person is competing against another
  • Implication - an occasion when you seem to suggest something without saying it directly
  • One-off - something that happens or is made or done only once
  • Fossilised - old-fashioned and never changing
  • Vengeful - expressing a strong wish to punish someone who has harmed you or your family or friends
  • Eschewed - to avoid something intentionally, or to give something up
  • Grassroots - the ordinary people in a society or an organization, especially a political party
  • Agrarian - relating to the land, especially the use of land for farming
  • Distress - a feeling of extreme worry, sadness, or pain
  • Discrimination - treating a person or particular group of people differently, especially in a worse way from the way in which you treat other people, because of their skin colour, sex, caste etc
  • Undermine - to make someone less confident, less powerful, or less likely to succeed, or to make something weaker
  • Rallied - improved
  • Irresponsibly - not thinking enough or not worrying about the possible results of what you do
