The critically-acclaimed film based on police brutality is adapted from M Chandrakumar’s novel Lock Up.

shows these migrant workers from Tamil Nadu being picked on by the police in Guntur. This leads to them being enmeshed in a web of crime and politics and they are finally killed in an encounter. The movie has similarities to some real-life events.

The movie won three honours (Best feature film in Tamil, best supporting actor for Samuthirakani and best editing for Kishore Te) at the 63rd National Film Awards, held earlier this year. The film premiered in the Orrizonti (Horizons) section of the 72nd Venice Film Festival, where it won the Amnesty International Italia Award.
The other Tamil films to be officially selected in the past for the Oscars are : Jeans, Indian, Kurithipunal, Devar Magan, Anjali, Nayagan, Deiva Magan.
In 2016, India had sent Marathi film Court as the official entry for Oscars. The 89th Academy Awards is scheduled to take place in February 2017 at Los Angeles.
