Reasoning : Analogy for Competitive Exams - Introduction

Analogy means correspondence. The analogy questions test the ability to see a relationship between two words or symbols and to apply this relationship to another set of words or symbols.

It is essentially a test of the ability to detect the exact nature of relationship. Many people, rather than examining the relationship, tend to use word association in their answer. One way to determine the best answer to an analogy question is to think of a word or phrase that links the first two words.


Let us look at the example below :

Ex :

Clock is to time as thermometer is to :
  1. temperature
  2. degrees
  3. weather
  4. centigrade
  5. none of these
A clock measures time; a thermometer measures temperature; hence temperature is the correct alternative. Verbal analogy questions usually appears in all levels of verbal ability, the important thing to remember is there is often more than one possible answer but you are looking for the word which best complete the analogy.

      • Ans : Just as newspaper is prepared in a press, cloth is manufactured in the mill. So, the answer is (4)
  2. Anaemia : Blood :: Anarchy : ?
    1. lawlessness

    3. monarchy
    4. disorder
    5. none of these
      • Ans : Anaemia is the state of lack of blood. Similarly, anarchy is the state of lack of government. Therefore the answer is (2)
  3. Botany : Plants :: Entomology : ?
    1. Snakes
    2. Insects
    3. Birds
    4. Germs
    5. None of these
      • Ans : Botany is the branch of science which deals with the study of plants. Similarly, entomology is the branch of science which deals with the study of insects. Hence the answer is (B).
  4. Menu : Food ::Catalogue : ?
    1. Rack
    2. Newspaper
    3. Library
    4. Books
    5. None of these
      • Ans : Menu lists all the food items in a restaurant. Similarly, catalogue is a list of all the books in a library. Hence, the answer is (D). 
  5. Pulp : Paper :: Hemp : ?
    1. Basket
    2. Yarn
    3. Rope
    4. Cotton
    5. None of these
      • Ans :  Pulp is the basic raw material used in the production of paper. Similarly Hemp is used to make rope. Hence the answer is (c).

  2. 'Wings' are the parts of a 'Fan'. Likewise 'Spokes' are the parts of 'Wheel'.
  3. 'Captain' is supposed to lead the battalion of 'Soldiers' in the same way as 'Leader' is supposed to lead the 'Followers'.
  4. 'Skirmish', if uncontrolled gives rise to 'War'. In the same way, 'Disease', if uncontrolled gives rise to 'Epidemic'.
  5. 'Tree' originates from 'Root'. Likewise 'Smoke' originates from 'fire'. 
  6. 'Good' is the word opposite in meaning to 'Bad'. Similarly 'Floor' is the antonym of 'Roof'.
  7. 'Oval' is the figure which is similar to the 'Circle'. Likewise 'Rectangle' is the figure which is similar to 'Square', as both of them have four corners. 
  8. 'Umpire' is required to give decision in 'Match'. Likewise 'Judge' is required to give decision in a 'Law Suit'.
  9. 'Cassette' is used as software in the 'Video'. Similarly 'CD' is used as software in the 'Computer'.
  10. Person-in-charge of a 'Museum' is known as 'Curator'. Likewise person-in-charge of a 'Prison' is called 'Jailer'.
