International Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met his British counterpart Theresa May for the first time on the sidelines of the ongoing G20 summit in China
    • They both held discussions on enhancing bilateral ties and building opportunities with the UK. 
    • Important Note : May succeeded David Cameron in July, who resigned after the UK voted to exit the European Union.
  • On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, Modi today discussed India's NSG bid with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Scorpene submarines' data leak with French President Francois Hollande
    • Note : Turkey was among the few countries which had stalled India's NSG membership. 
  • The status of giant pandas in China was updated to 'vulnerable' from 'endangered' due to a population rebound, during an update to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List. 
    • There are currently an estimated 2,060 giant pandas in China. 
    • Note : The country recognises giant pandas as its National Animal.
  • India is the Second most 'unequal' country after Russia in terms of wealth and its distribution among masses, with 54% of the wealth being held by millionaires, a report by a wealth research firm announced today. 
    • Note : India is among the 10 richest countries, but the average Indian is poor and the gap between rich and poor is quite high.

National Affairs
  • Teachers Day‬ is being observed across the country today (5th September). 
    • Important Points to Note : 
    • 5th September is celebrated as Teachers Day as a mark of respect to teachers and their contributions to the society.
    • This day commemorates birth anniversary of former President Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a philosopher and a teacher par excellence, and his contribution towards Indian education system. 
    • He was honored with  Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954.
    • This is his 126th Birth Day.
    • Since 1962, his birthday is celebrated in India as Teachers' Day.
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday released a Commemorative coin (Rs. 125) and a Circulation coin (Rs. 10) in honour of former President of India Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
  • Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations began today in honour of the birthday of Hindu God Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. 
    • Clay idols of Lord Ganesha are installed in Pandals (temporary shrines) during the ten-day festival. 
    • The end of the festival is marked with the immersion of the idols into water bodies.
  • To clean up the examination system after the toppers scam, the Bihar School Examination Board has decided to link Aadhaar card number of the students with their examination forms to avoid duplication. 
    • Important Points to Note : 
    • This initiative is the first by any state board in the country
    • This would add greater transparency and facilitate easier access to the documents.
  • The first ever 'Miss India' contest for visually impaired and low-vision girls was held in Orissa, Bhubaneswar last week. 
    • The four girls, who were shortlisted from the fifty-six participants will be sent to Mumbai. 
    • They will be competing against thirty other contestants from different states for the finale which will be held in January 2017.

New Appointments
  • Dr Urjit R Patel has assumed charge as the 24th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) effective September 4, 2016, an official release stated today. 
    • The 52-year old, who served as the Deputy Governor since January 2013, will be succeeding Raghuram Rajan, who in June announced that he won’t be seeking a second term as the RBI chief.
  • The Haryana government has announced the appointment of Rio bronze medal winning Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik as the Wrestling Director at Rohtak's Maharshi Dayanand University
    • Haryana's Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Anil Vij also announced a ₹21 lakh reward and a 500 square yard​ plot in addition to the ₹2.5 crore already awarded under the state's sports policy.

Business & Economy
  • Solar power capacity of about 4,800 MW will be added in India this year as the number of installations are increasing. 
    • Important Points to Note : 
    • However, power companies have been reluctant to buy solar energy amid low electricity prices. 
    • India's cumulative solar energy installations generate 8,100 MW as of August 2016.

Awards & Honors
  • Agra's 12-year-old Shahan Ali Mohsin, has became the first Indian to win the Asian karting championship, after recovering from an infection before the final. 
  • Brett Smitheram, a 37-year-old British man, has won the World Scrabble Championship after using the word 'Braconid', meaning a parasitic wasp, which earned him the highest score of 176 points.
General Knowledge
  • The Karni Mata Temple is a temple near Bikaner in Rajasthan where rats are worshipped
    • It houses about 20,000 black rats and a few white rats, believed to be the manifestations of Karni Mata and her sons. 
    • If a rat is killed, a gold or silver rat statue must be given to the temple.

Deaths
  • Australian writer and social commentator Richard Neville, best known for co-founding the counterculture magazine Oz, died today.
    • Through the magazine, Neville countered Australia's conservatism in the 1960s, with issues covering abortion, censorship and homosexuality. 
    • The activist was twice sentenced for obscenity but was acquitted on appeal after public outcry.
Sports
  • Mercedes' German Formula One racer Nico Rosberg won the Italian Grand Prix ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton, and Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel in Monza today. 
    • With the win, Rosberg closed the difference between him and Hamilton to two points in the drivers' tally.
    •  Note : This was Rosberg's maiden victory at the Italian Grand Prix.
  • Olympic gold-medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra announced his retirement from shooting today.
