- Narendra Modi is on a visit to Vietnam.
- This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Vietnam in 15 years.
- During this visit, he met his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyễn Xuân Phúc and signed 12 agreements.
- He also announced a new line of credit of $500 million for Vietnam to facilitate defence cooperation.
- Further, the countries decided to upgrade ties from Strategic Partnership to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
- PM Narendra Modi and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi have decided to step up Defence and Security cooperation to deal with radicalisation and terrorism, during bilateral talks held in India yesterday.
- Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif today inaugurated China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects including a dam, business complex, and a University in Gwadar, Balochistan.
- The Election Commission today confirmed that the Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress is now a 'National party'.
- Important Points to Note :
- Trinamool Congress became India's Seventh national party after it was recognised as a 'State party' in West Bengal, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.
- The party will now be allotted its flower and grass symbol exclusively to contest elections across India.
- The Supreme Court today urged the Karnataka government to release the Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu on humanitarian grounds.
- Earlier, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah had denied releasing the water to Tamil Nadu citing shortage of rainfall.
- As per Cauvery water tribunal, Tamil Nadu is entitled to receive water from the Cauvery reservoir.
- Aiming to promote avian tourism, the Goa forest department is going to host its first "Bird Festival" in the state in November.
- The event will include bird-watching sessions at the state’s numerous wildlife sanctuaries.
- Note : Goa is home to nearly a third of all the bird species in the country.
- PM Narendra Modi announced a ₹200 crore package for Jammu & Kashmir, to involve the state’s youngsters in sports.
- Two stadiums in Srinagar and Jammu would be upgraded as per international standards, besides the construction of indoor sporting halls in all districts.

- Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyễn Xuân Phúc today inked a protocol on the double taxation avoidance agreement, along with signing 11 other agreements.
- The two countries aim to achieve a comprehensive strategic partnership to foster better ties.
- India is going to sign treaties with Russia and South Africa for film production, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said at the BRICS Film Festival in New Delhi.
- He also said that 1,000 Indian films did a business of over $2 billion last year.
- The Puducherry Assembly ratified the Constitution Amendment Bill on the Goods and Services Tax.
- The Rajasthan Assembly approved the Constitutional Amendment Bill on Goods and Services Tax (GST) unanimously today.
- Rajasthan has become the 17th state after Orissa to ratify the GST Bill.
- Note : The tax reform bill has already fulfilled the requirement of approval from at least 16 state/UT legislatures and can be sent to President Pranab Mukherjee for his approval.
- Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov has passed away.
- Karimov had ruled Uzbekistan since 1989 as an autocrat and has reportedly named no successor.
- India contributed nearly twenty five lakh soldiers to the British war effort in the Second World War, making it the largest ever volunteer force in the world.
- Starting with nearly 2 lakh soldiers in 1939 and rising to over 20 lakh by 1945, the army fought in Asia, Africa, and Europe.
- Note : World War II ended on September 2, 1945.

- Actor Rishi Kapoor was felicitated at the opening ceremony of the first BRICS Film Festival for his and the Kapoor family’s contribution to the field of cinema.
- Important Points to Note :
- The festival, which is an initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, started in New Delhi yesterday.
- It will feature films from the five member countries and also has a competition section.
- The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has awarded former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan with an Honorary Life Membership of the club.
- Important Points to Note :
- Zaheer Khan is the second former Indian player to be elected in recent months following Virender Sehwag, who was inducted as a member in August.
- Zaheer became the 24th Indian cricketer to be awarded life membership at the MCC.
Sports
- India is sending a contingent of 17 athletes, its largest ever, to the Paralympic Games beginning September 7 in Rio de Janeiro.
- The contingent consists of 15 men and two women who will compete across five sports, including archery, athletics, powerlifting, shooting and swimming.
- Important Note : India has participated in ten Paralympics till now, winning eight medals, including two golds.
- As per reports, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt’s 2012 London Olympics bronze medal may get upgraded to gold, after winner Toghrul Asgarov from Azerbaijan reportedly failed doping retests.
- Note : Earlier, Dutt had tweeted his medal was upgraded to silver after late Russian wrestler Besik Kudukhov’s samples tested positive for banned substances.
- Russia is going to organise a two-day tournament for its banned Paralympians, coinciding with the start of the Paralympic Games in Brazil on September 7.
