Topic 1 : "Russia’s tainted athletics"

  • Tainted - spoiled
  • Doping - the act of giving a person drugs in order to make them perform better in a competition
  • Skeletons from the closet - an embarrassing secret about your past that you do not want anyone to know
  • Tumbling out - to fall or drop out of something
  • Embarrassing - nervous, worried, or uncomfortable
  • Alleged - to say something without proof
  • Elaborate - involving many carefully arranged parts
  • Corroborated - confirmed
  • Revelation - a surprising and previously unknown fact that has been disclosed to others
  • Deeply-rooted - strong, happening for so long abd it is difficult to change
  • Track and field - group of sports in which people compete, including running, jumping, and throwing
  • Overturn - to change a legal decision
  • Overhauling - to completely change a system in order to make it work more effectively
  • Left the door open - provided the possibility that something might happen
  • Neutral - not supporting or helping either side in a disagreement / impartial
  • Subsequent - following (coming after something in time)
  • Arbitration - the process of solving an argument between people by helping them to agree to an acceptable solution.
  • Final nail in the coffin - an event that causes the failure of something that had already started to fail
  • Tainted - spoiled
  • Collusion - to do something secretly with another person or group, in order to cheat others
  • Pinnacle - the most successful point
  • Credibility - the quality of being trusted and believed in
  • Vast - of very great extent or quantity
  • Contingent - a group of people from the same country, organization, etc who are part of a much larger group
  • Geopolitics - political activity as influenced by the physical features of a country or area of the world
  • Stench - a bad effect that follows an unpleasant event or situation and is noticeable for a long time
  • Quadrennial - recurring every four years
  • Extravaganza - a large, exciting, and expensive event or entertainment
  • Transgression - an action that breaks a law or rule
  • Disgraced - to be a very bad situation
  • Instrumental - involved in an important way in making something happen

Topic 2 : "Reaching out to the Valley"

  • Reaching out to - to offer help and support to someone
  • Valley - an area of low land between hills or mountains
  • Protest - an occasion when people show that they disagree with something by standing somewhere, shouting, carrying signs, etc
  • Caught by surprise - to happen unexpectedly
  • Semblance - a situation or condition that is similar to what is wanted or expected, but is not exactly as hoped for
  • Tenuous - thin, weak, and easily broken
  • Curfew - a rule that everyone must stay at home between particular times, usually at night, especially during a war or a period of political trouble
  • Tactic - a planned way of doing something
  • Disperse - if a crowd of people disperses, or if someone disperses it, the people separate and go in different directions
  • Stone-pelters - people who throw stones repeatedly at others
  • Chaired - to be the person in charge of a meeting, committee, or company
  • Stakeholder - a person or company that has invested in a business and owns part of it
  • Separatist - a member of a group of people who want to be independent
  • Framework - a set of principles, ideas etc that you use when you are forming your decisions and judgments
  • Regrettably - used for saying that you are sad or sorry about something
  • Platitude - something that has been said so often that it is no longer interesting and shows a lack of imagination
  • Hollow - empty inside
  • Cliche - not interesting or exciting
  • Worn-out - too old or damaged to use any longer
  • Outrage - anger and annoyance
  • Weariness - bored / tiredness (especially after working hard for a long time)
  • Distress - a feeling that you have when you are very unhappy, worried, or upset
  • Nudged - to move slowly and almost reach a higher point or level
  • Certitude - the feeling of being certain about something
  • Conscious - noticing that something exists or is happening and realizing that it is important
  • Bargain - an agreement in which two people or groups each promise to do something
  • Accession - the occasion on which someone formally takes a position of authority
  • Rebuttal - a statement that says that something is not true
  • Cautiously - carefully
  • Emphasised - to give particular importance or attention to something
  • Agony - great pain
  • Touchstone - a standard that is used for testing or judging other things
  • Forged - to develop a successful relationship
  • Sidestepping - to avoid something difficult or unpleasant
  • Allegiance - loyalty and support for a ruler, country, group, or belief
  • Breakthrough - an achievement that comes after a lot of hard work
  • Dissipated - spending too much time and money on physical pleasures that are not good for your health
  • Asymmetric - the quality of being different or strange
  • Devolution - the process of taking power from a central authority or government and giving it to smaller and more local regions
  • Provinces - the parts of a country outside the capital city or the large cities
  • Reflexively - without thinking
