Meet the 1st woman violinist to get Sangita Kalanidhi Award : V. Kanyakumari

Versatile violinist A. Kanyakumari, who specializes in Carnatic music, is going to be honored with the Sangita Kalanidhi Award for the year 2016. The executive committee of the Academy held on July 24 has unanimously chosen her for this prestigious award. The title, considered a prestigious award in Carnatic music, will be conferred on Kanyakumari on January 1, 2017.

Important Point to Note : She is the first female violinist ever in the history of the academy to have been chosen for the prestigious award.

The Sangita Kala Acharya Award (two awards) will be conferred on Rudrapatnam brothers, RN Thyagarajan and RN Tharanathan (Vocal duo) Prof K Venkataramanan (Vocalist and music teacher), the release said.

About Sangita Kalanidhi Award

This award honors expert Carnatic Musicians by the Madras Music Academy. This honour is considered one of the highest awards in Carnatic music.
