English Vocabulary in 365 Days - Lesson 2

Hello everyone, in our Lesson 1, we learnt about the prefixes a, an.  They represent the meaning without; not; absence of something. Today we shall see two more prefixes.

Day 2 : Ab, Abs


ab, abs - away; from; not


Let's try to understand this with some examples....

Word Analysis
  1. abnormal (adjective) = away from the normal
    •  ab - Prefix = away / not
    • normal - Root = ordinary / usual
  2. absent (adjective) = not present in something (to be away from something)
    • This word came from absentia (a Latin word), present participle of abesse.
    • ab - Prefix = from
    • sent (esse) - Root = to be
  3. abstract (adjective) = draw away.
    • abs - Prefix = from
    • tract (trahere) - Root = draw off
  4. absorb (verb) = suck in, drink in
    • ab - Prefix = from
    • sorb (sorbere) - Root = suck in
Let's have a look at some more words with ab, abs prefixes, for better understanding.
  1. absolute = total and complete 
  2. abstain = to stay away from something
  3. absolve = to state formally that somebody is not guilty or responsible for something
  4. abject = showing no pride or respect for yourself
  5. absurd = stupid and unreasonable,
  6. abscond = to go away suddenly and secretly in order to escape from somewhere
  7. abscess = a painful swollen area in the body that contains pus (= thick, yellow liquid)

Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.

d. throughly
