Topic 1 : "The cost of failure"

  • Faction - a group within a larger group, especially one with slightly different ideas from the main group
  • Unfettered - not limited by rules or any other controlling influence
  • Lower tiers - lower levels
  • Dynastic - a series of rulers or leaders who are all from the same family
  • Lax - without much care, attention, or control
  • Infighting - competition between people within a group, especially to improve their own position
  • Intolerant - disapproving of or refusing to accept ideas or ways, which are different from your own
  • Introspection - examination of your own ideas, thoughts, and feelings
  • Dismal - sad and without hope
  • Rational - based on the reason or logic
  • Clique - a small group of people who spend their time together and do not welcome other people into that group
  • Reproof - an expression of blame or disapproval
  • Context - the situation within which something exists or happens
  • Invariably - always
  • Diverse - very different
  • Satraps - local rulers
  • Unassailable - unable to be attacked, questioned, or defeated
  • Stand in the way of something - to try to stop or prevent something
  • Appraisal - the process of examining someone or something in order to judge their qualities, success
  • Consolation - a small prize given to someone who has taken part in a competition, but who has not won
  • Viable - capable of working successfully
  • Alliance - a union or association formed for mutual benefit
  • Accommodate - to give what is needed to someone
  • Stitch together - to create or form something quickly or roughly
  • Unfastening - to release or open something that is fixed or closed
  • Reflected - to show / express something
  • Eventual - happening or existing at the end
  • Contested - to take part in a competition
  • Criteria - a standard by which you judge, decide about, or deal with something
  • Legislature - the group of people in a country who have the power to make and change laws
  • Loyalty - a strong feeling of support
  • Rallied against something - to protest against something
  • Strongmen - people who are very powerful and able to cause political change
  • Rivalry - competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field
  • Consequences - results / effects
  • Debilitating - causing weakness

Topic 2 : "No jokes please, we’re Indian"

  • Sought - to ask
  • Grounds - reasons sufficient in law to do something
  • Threshold - the level or point at which you start to experience something
  • Taking offence - to be insulted by someone or something
  • Outraged - feeling anger and shock
  • Roast - to criticize very seriously
  • Takedowns - to make somebody feel ashamed or stupid
  • For instance - for example
  • Whipped - to beat with a leather rope
  • Swap - exchange
  • Spoofed - to imitate somebody in a funny way
  • Jibes - insulting remarks that are aimed to make someone look stupid
  • Locker-room chatter - used to describe the type of sexual jokes and remarks that men are thought to enjoy when they are together
  • Deemed - to consider or judge something in a particular way
  • Passable - satisfactory / just good enough to be acceptable
  • Applaud - show approval or praise by clapping
  • Condemn - express complete disapproval of
  • Spotlight - to receive a lot of public attention
  • Mobilises - to organize or prepare something
  • Mockery - teasing language or behaviour directed at a particular person
  • Stifle - to prevent something from happening, being expressed, or continuing
  • To look over her shoulder - to behave in a way that shows you feel nervous about something that might happen
  • Obvious- easy to see, recognize, or understand
  • Intended - planned or meant
  • Critiqued - judged
  • Evenly - in equal amounts
  • Openness - honest and not trying to keep things secret
  • Curb - to control or limit something that is not wanted
  • Sensitisation - the process of becoming highly sensitive to specific events or situations
  • Curbed - controlled
  • Menacingly - harmfulluy
  • Warrant - to make a particular activity necessary
  • Scrutiny - critical observation or examination
  • Evolve - to develop slowly
  • Internalises - to accept or absorb an idea, opinion, belief, etc. so that it becomes part of your character
  • Progressive - encouraging change in society
