Topic 1 : "Steering India to safer roads"

  • Steering - to take something in the direction in which you want it
  • Epidemic - a particular problem that seriously affects many people at the same time (disease)
  • Crisis - a time of great difficulty or danger
  • Antiquated - old-fashioned or outdated
  • Affirming - to state something as true
  • Significantly - in a way that is easy to see or by a large amount
  • Injury - physical harm or damage to someone's body caused by an accident or an attack
  • Accurate - exact
  • Hospitalisation - the act of taking someone to hospital and keeping them there for treatment
  • Underestimated - estimate (something) to be smaller or less important than it really is
  • Undertaking - a formal pledge or promise to do something
  • Fatal - causing death
  • Steadily - calmly and in a controlled way
  • Absolute - very great or to the largest degree possible
  • Fatality - an occurrence of death by accident, in war, or from disease
  • Annual - occurring once every year
  • Calamitous - a serious accident or bad event causing damage or suffering
  • Emergency - a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action
  • vulnerable - able to be easily physically, emotionally, or mentally hurt, influenced, or attacked
  • Pedestrians - a person who is walking, especially in an area where vehicles go
  • Compelled - force someone to do something
  • Fast-paced - happening very quickly
  • Legislation - the process of making laws
  • Archaic - very old or old-fashioned.
  • Composite - something that is made of various different parts
  • Civic - relating to a city or town, especially its administration; municipal
  • Infrastructure - the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for the operation of a society
  • Unlikely - not the same as you would usually expect
  • Envisaged - form a mental picture of (something not yet existing or known)
  • Empowered - to give someone official authority or the freedom to do something
  • Oversight -  responsibility for a job or activity and for making sure it is being done correctly
  • Monitoring - observing and checking the progress or quality of something
  • Roadworthiness - ability of a vehicle to be in a suitable operating condition for safe driving
  • Monopoly -  complete control of something, especially an area of business, so that others have no share
  • Distressing - upsetting
  • Prognosis - a statement of what is judged likely to happen in the future
  • Determined - having made a strong decision and decided not to change it

Topic 2 : "Growing unrest in France"

  • Unrest - disagreements or fighting between different groups of people
  • Strikes - attacks
  • Left-leaning - sympathetic to the left in politics
  • Unprecedented - never done or known before
  • Abandon - to leave
  • Reform - to make an improvement, especially by changing the structure of something
  • Decree - an official statement that something must happen
  • Negotiate - to have formal discussions with someone in order to reach an agreement with them
  • Severance - money paid by an employer to an employee whose job the employer has had to bring to an end
  • Downsize - make something smaller
  • Workforce - the group of people who work in a company, industry, country, etc
  • Overhauling - to repair or improve something so that every part of it works as it should
  • Spur - to encourage an activity or development or make it happen faster
  • Stalled - stopped
  • Hovers - to stand somewhere
  • Stubbornly - difficult to move, change, or deal with
  • Jump-start - to improve a situation by taking a particular action
  • Accomplish - achieve or complete successfully
  • Antagonising - to make someone dislike you or feel opposed to you
  • Ally -  someone who helps and supports
  • Vowed - promised
  • Egalitarianism - believing that all people are equally important and should have the same rights and opportunities in life
  • Constituency - a group of voters in a specified area who elect a representative to a legislative body
  • Betrayed - cheated
  • Demonstrated - clearly showed
  • Protests - a strong complaint expressing disagreement, disapproval, or opposition
  • Unilaterally - involving only one group or country
  • Rift - a serious break in friendly relations
  • Trigger - an event that causes something bad to start
  • Delicate - a situation that needs to be dealt with carefully in order to avoid trouble
  • Emergency - a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action
  • Heightened - to increase or make something increase
  • Scenario - situation
  • The last thing the country needs - something that the country do not want
  • Showdown - an important argument that is aimed to end a disagreement that has existed for a long time
  • High-handedness - using power or authority more forcefully than is needed, without thinking about the feelings or wishes of other people
  • Unilateralism - the process of acting, reaching a decision without consulting others
  • Subsidy - money given as part of the cost of something, to help or encourage it to happen
  • Amid - surrounded by / in the middle of
  • Stalled - stopped
