Topic 1 : "New energy in old friendship"


  • Acquaintance - someone you know a little about, but they’re not your best friend or anything
  • Chalking out - make a sketch of (to explain something carefully to someone)
  • Avenue - approach to doing something
  • Consistent - always behaving in the same way
  • Contrast - to show a difference (opposition)
  • Maritime - related to sea
  • Firm up (something) - fix up (to fix something)
  • Abandon - to leave something
  • Neutral - having no personal preference
  • Overturn - to change something (here impression)
  • Outlook - point of view (a person's way of understanding and thinking about something)
  • Acquisition - the ?process of getting something
  • Significant - important or ?noticeable
  • Despite - without being affected by
  • Foster - encourage the development of something
  • Immense - extremely large / great
  • Languish - to become weak
  • Bolster - support or strengthen

Topic 2 : "Opposition for opposition’s sake"


  • Stopover - a break in a journey
  • Exude - to show something (feeling / emotion etc) very clearly or strongly
  • Bonhomie - Friendliness 
  • Agenda - a list of items to be discussed at a formal meeting
  • Rue - regret (to feel sorry for something)
  • Combative - ready or eager to fight or argue
  • Constricted - to ​become ​tighter and ​narrower
  • Vis-à-vis - in ​comparison with
  • Undermine - lessen the effectiveness
  • U-turns - a change of plan
  • Virtue - the quality of doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong
  • Consequence - a result or effect
  • Impulsive - doing things ​suddenly without any ​planning and without ​considering the ​effects they may have
  • Ensue - to follow as a result
  • Overtures - a ​communication made to someone in ​order to ​offer something
  • Frivolous - not having any serious purpose or value
  • Bear fruit - to produce successful ​results
  • Betrays - to not be ​loyal to someone (do not do what they ​promised)
  • Cautionary - warning
  • Instinct - inborn behavior (something you don't need to learn)
  • Absolute - perfect / complete
  • Extreme - very ​large in ​amount or ​degree
  • Obvious -  ​easy to ​see / understand
  • Spectacularly - in a very ​beautiful way that ​people ​admire
  • Sell-out - one who betrays a cause for personal advancement
  • Apolitical - not interested or involved in politics
  • Introspect - to look inside (your own thoughts / behaviour etc)
  • Petty - of little or no importance
  • Bipartisan - supported by both sides (parties)
  • Consensus - a general agreement (everyone agrees on something)
  • Elusive - difficult to find / catch / achieve
  • Populist - political ​ideas and ​activities that are ​intended to get the ​support of ​ordinary ​people by giving them what they ​want
  • Grandstanding - behaviour that is intended to get public attention and approval
  • Threaten - to ​tell someone that you will hurt them or ​cause ​problems if they do not do what you ​want
