International Affairs
  • Today (23rd June) is International Olympic Day.
    • This day was introduced in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on 23 June 1894 at the Sorbonne in Paris.
    • The goal of this day is to promote participation in sport across the globe regardless of age, gender or athletic ability.         
  • European Union foreign ministers extended economic sanctions on Russia over its involvement in Ukraine by six months until the end of January 2016.
    • The ministers, meeting in Luxembourg, also agreed to launch a naval mission in the Mediterranean to combat people smugglers who have brought thousands of migrants on perilous journeys to Europe from Libya.
  • South Africa and India have renewed an agreement to extend cooperation in the field of social innovation, astronomy, agriculture, biotechnology and indigenous knowledge systems for the next three years.
National Affairs
  • The Government will soon launch One Child -One Tree scheme to sensitize children about protection of environment and promotion of tree plantation in India.
    • Under the scheme, children will set up nursery in their schools where they will sow seed and take care of the sapling for 10 months.
    • Thereafter, they will be allowed to bring the plants to their home where they can replant them in their garden or land available with them.

  • Maharashtra government has declared Blue Mormon as the state butterfly.
    • Note : Maharashtra has become the first state to have a state butterfly.
    • Maharashtra already has,  
      • Indian Giant Squirrel (Shekru) as its state animal, 
      • Yellow Footed Green Pigeon (Hariyal) as state bird, 
      • Mango as state tree, and 
      • Lagerststroemia (Jarul) as state Flower 
    • About Blue Mormon :
      • The Blue Mormon is the second largest in size among all butterflies, second only to the Southern Birdwing. 
      • It has velvet like black wings with bright blue spots. 
      • The lower end of the wings are black while the body has some red spots on one side. 
      • It is found only in Sri Lanka, Western Ghats of Maharashtra, and the coastal belts of India.

  • Kerala government has declared 22nd June as the 'Snake Bird Day' as part of a campaign to protect the endangered species.
    • About Snake Bird :
      • Known as Darter-Anhinga Melanogaster in scientific parlance, snake bird is a large slender long-necked water bird and is mostly black with silver wing markings.

Business & Economy
  • The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has notified an order to make Universal Account Number (UAN) mandatory for all employers covered under the Employees Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.
  • Government has proposed, tax benefits in terms of income tax rebates to consumers for paying a certain proportion of their expenditure through electronic means.

Deaths
  • James Horner (61), the two-time Oscar-winning composer of some of the biggest Hollywood hits like "Titanic", "Braveheart" and 'Avatar", died in a plane crash.
  • Sister Nirmala (81), who succeeded Mother Teresa as superior general of the Missionaries of Charity passed away.
    • Nirmala became the second head of the Missionaries of Charity after its founder Mother Teresa stepped down from the post in March 1997 (Mother Teresa died on September 5th of the same year).
    • Note : Nirmala held the post till March 24, 2009, when she was succeeded by Sister Mary Prema.

Science & Technology
  • The Indian Mars orbiter spacecraft completed its 100th orbit around Mars
    • It is also gradually coming out of the blackout it had entered earlier this month.
    • Launched from Indian spaceport of Sriharikota on November 5th, 2013, MOM reached the red planet in September last year and has outlived its planned mission life of six months in a Martian orbit.

Books & Authors
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today released the book "Red Tape to Red Carpet... and then some," in New Delhi,
    • The book has been written by Mrs. Gina Rinehart, the Chairperson of the Australian mining company Hancock Prospecting Group. 

Careers
  • After the Supreme Court asked the CBSE to re-conduct the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) exams, it was announced that the exams will be conducted on 25th July 2015.
    • The apex court had directed the re-examination in view of large-scale cheating in the test with students getting answers in the examination hall at many places.
