International Affairs
- The Portuguese Cabinet has approved rules under which descendants of Jews expelled from Portugal more than 500 years ago can claim citizenship
- Many Sephardic Jews were killed, forced to convert to Christianity or leave at the end of the 15th Century.
- Parliament paved the way for a change in citizenship laws two years ago, but the move needed Cabinet approval.
- From now on, descendants of Sephardic Jews who can prove a strong link to Portugal can apply for a passport.
National Affairs
- The nation today pays homage to Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi on his 67th death anniversary.
- Gujarat paid rich tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary as the entire state observed two minutes silence at 11 am.
- The day is also observed as Martyrs` Day. On this day in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated at a prayer meeting.
- Supreme Court today criticized the Centre on the slow pace in implementing the "Babu Jagjivan Ram Chhatrawas Yojana" to provide hostels to students belonging to Scheduled castes and Scheduled tribes.
- It said the government should not frame schemes that it cannot implement.
- The apex court expressed annoyance over poor conditions in hostels in educational institutions across the country, saying most of them are devoid of even the bare minimum facilities.
- Holding the Union government responsible for the crisis, the court directed the centre and State governments to carry out a survey and inform about the status of hostels being constructed under the scheme within four months.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi today asked the country's IT experts to explore ways to provide as many services as possible through mobile phones to boost M-Governance (Mobile-Governance).
- The Prime Minister noted that e-Governance was an essential part of his ambitious 'Digital India' project and underlined that the scale and speed of India's development journey requires maximum and smart utilization of latest technology.

- According to latest latest 'Global Investment Trade Monitor' report, India's FDI increased by 26 per cent in 2014 to nearly $ 35 billion with maximum growth in the services sector.
- China toppled the US in 2014 as the world's largest recipient of FDI - a position that the US had been holding almost consistently since the 1980's
- This report was released by UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development)

- Japan's Katsuhiro Otomo became the first manga cartoonist to win a Lifetime Achievement Award at France's renowned International Angouleme comics festival
- The 60 year old is known the world over for the cult manga series Akira, set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo built on the ashes of a city that was destroyed by a blast that triggered World War III.
- Last year this award went to Bill Watterson, the creator of Calvin and Hobbes.
New Appointments
- African leaders today appointed Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe as the new chairman of the 54-nation African Union.
- The 90-year-old Mugabe, who has ruled his country since 1980, succeeds Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.
- Defence Secretary R.K. Mathur was today given the additional charge of secretary DRDO as the term of incumbent secretary Avinash Chander ends Jan 31.
- Mathur will hold the charge for three months "or till further orders".

- Gorkha National Liberation Front founder Subhash Ghisingh, who spearheaded the Gorkhaland movement in the 1980s passed away.

On 29th January 2015, Shekhar Sen has been appointed as the chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi. This post was unoccupied since September 2014 after Chairman Leela Samson had resigned.
About Shekhar Sen :
He is a is a singer, music composer, lyricist and actor.
He is famous for his monoact musical plays "Tulsi", "Kabeer", "Vivekanand", "Saahab" & "Soordas".
He was awarded with Padma Shri Award in Art field by Indian Government, 2015.
2. Name the GNLF founder who has passed away - Subhash Ghisingh
On 30th January 2015, Subhash Ghisingh founder of Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) has passed away. He was 78 years old. He had lead the Gorkhaland movement in the 1980s for a separate state for Gorkha people living in Darjeeling, West Bengal.
About Subhash Ghisingh :
He was born on 22 June 1936 at Manju Tea Estate in Darjeeling, West Bengal.
He was a soldier in Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army from 1954 to 1960.
He formed a political organisation known as Nilo Jhanda to protect rights of the Gorkhas in 1968.
He founded GNLF in 1980 and headed the movement in 1980.
3. Which Country stood first in the list of Credit Suisse emerging consumer scorecard 2015 - India
On 30th January 2015, India stood first in the list of Credit Suisse emerging consumer scorecard 2015, among the 9 emerging economies. This scorecard was produced by fifth annual Emerging Consumer Survey by the Credit Suisse Research Institute.
About the Survey :
The survey had questioned consumers of the nine emerging economies including Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Turkey.
Ranking of other countries is as such: Brazil (2nd), Indonesia (3rd), Saudi Arabia (4th), China (5th), Turkey (6th), Mexico (7th), Russia (8th) and South Africa (9th).
According to survey in 2014, India was placed at fourth position.
According to survey, formation of a strong government in India had stimulated a major revival of consumer sentiment in 2014.
E-Commerce share in India have increased to 32% from 20% in 2013.
4. Who is appointed as the chairman of African Union - Robert Mugabe
On 30th January 2015, Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has been appointed as Chairman of African Union (AU). He will be serving as the 13th Chairman of African Union. He is the longest serving President of Zimbabwe.
About African Union :
Its headquarters is located at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The motto of AU is A United and Strong Africa.
It has a total of 54 members.
5. On which cricketer ICC has revoked ban - Pakistan's fast bowler Mohammad Amir
On 30th January 2015, ICC has revoked the five-year ban imposed on Pakistan's fast bowler Mohammad Amir. The ban was due to end on 2 September 2015. This decision was taken during the board meeting of ICC in Dubai.
