International Affairs
  • The president of Yemen Mansour Hadi, has resigned today along with his prime minister Khaled Bahah and cabinet in protest at the takeover of the capital Sanaa by Shia Houthi rebels, creating a dangerous political vacuum.
  • In a stern message to Pakistan, US President Barack Obama has said that the safe havens of terrorism within that country are not acceptable and those behind the Mumbai attack, must face justice.
    • Ahead of his visit to New Delhi, Obama said in an e-mail interview to an Indian Magazine in New Delhi, that US will keep working with India for a future that delivers greater security, prosperity and dignity for all people.
    • Upbeat about his upcoming three-day visit to India whom he described as a "natural partner", Obama said he was proud to be the first US President to visit India twice.
    • He also said that, he saw it as an opportunity to work with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make concrete progress and to hopefully begin a new era in the history between US and India.
  • Ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit, India and the US today agreed to cooperate in the field of Information & Communications Technology and Electronics (ICTE) to facilitate, among others, the ambitious 'Digital India' programme aimed at transforming India into a digital-empowered society and knowledge economy.
    • The relevant Joint Declaration of Intent for cooperation in the field of Information & Communications Technology and Electronics (ICTE) was signed by Secretary in the Department of Electronics and IT R.S. Sharma, and US Ambassador to India Richard Verma.
    • The Intent will facilitate the 'Digital India' programme, electronic manufacturing, cyber security and several other such related fields between two countries.

National Affairs
  • Netaji ‎Subhas Chandra Bose‬'s 118th birth anniversary today. 
  • India has declared national mourning tomorrow as a mark of respect to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia who died today.
  • The government will go ahead with its disinvestment programme and "a lot of activity" is expected on that front, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said today, while hinting at complete privatisation of some loss-making PSUs at a later stage.
    • He also said that the government's tax revenue collections have been good, although refunds for past periods are making an impact. 
  • In a major reshuffle in the Assam Ministry, a new set of 14 Ministers took oath today at Raj Bhawan in Guwahati.
    • Governor PB Acharya administered the oath taking ceremony in presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
    • It is a major reshuffle in Tarun Gagoi’s three and half-year old ministry for the first time.
    • Eleven ministers are of cabinet rank in the new ministry while 3 MLAs were included as the Minister of State with Independent charge.

Deaths
  • Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah (90), the powerful U.S. ally who joined Washington’s fight against al-Qaeda and sought to modernize the ultraconservative Muslim kingdom with incremental but significant reforms, including nudging open greater opportunities for women, has died today.
    • His 79-year-old half-brother, Salman, has been confirmed as the new king.
  • Telugu film actor and comedian Mylavarapu Surya Narayana (M. S. Narayana), a veteran with over 750 films to his credit, passed away

New Appointments
  • Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz was appointed as the new king of Saudi Arabia, immediately after the death of King Abdullah.
    • Earlier, king Salman was the Crown Prince and defence minister since 2012. t.
    • He was also served as the Governor of capital Riyadh for nearly 50 years.
    • He is known to be a mediator of disputes within the sprawling royal family.
  • Vodafone has appointed Sunil Sood as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for its India operations.
    • He will be first Indian CEO of Vodafone.

People in News
  • Saraswathi Menon, an eminent Indian academician is among seven experts nominated by UN chief Ban Ki-moon to be part of an advisory group that will conduct a policy and institutional review of the world body's peace-building architecture and make recommendations.
    • Saraswathi Menon is the former Director of the Policy Division in UN Women
    • She will be among the members of the Advisory Group to review peace building architecture.
  • Chile will reopen an investigation into the death of Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda to determine if the poet was poisoned more than 40 years ago by a military dictatorship, after tests on his exhumed body in 2013 found no evidence to back the claims.

Awards & Honors
  • Pulitzer Prize-winning Indian American writer Jhumpa Lahiri has won the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2015.
    • She received the prestigious $50,000 award for her book “The Lowland,” set in both New England and the eastern state of West Bengal during the late 1960s when the Naxalite movement, a separatist uprising, began.

    'HDFC Bank among world's 50 most valued banks in 2014 ...



    HDFC Bank is the lone Indian entity among the world’s 50 most valued
    lenders in 2014 with a market capitalisation of close to USD 41 billion.

    Ranked at the 45th position, the private sector bank is ahead of
    global majors Credit Suisse, DBS Group, and Standard Chartered with a
    market capitalisation of USD 40.58 billion.

    In the top 50 list compiled by Relbanks, SBI has been ranked at 51th
    with market capitalisation of USD 36.40 while ICICI Bank with USD 33.42
    billion is 55th.

    With more than 70 million customers and over 9,000 locations and a
    market cap of USD 284.39 billion, Well Fargo of the USA is the largest
    bank in the world based on market capitalisation. It is the second
    largest bank in the US by deposits and debit cards.

    Well Fargo is followed by the Industrial & Commercial Bank of
    China (ICBC) with the market capitalisation of USD 269.70 billion. It is
    followed by JP Morgan Chase of again the USA with the market
    capitalisation of USD 233.94 billion.

    Top ten banks of the world includes 4 from the USA, 4 from China and one each from the UK and Australia.

    For the second quarter ended September 2014, HDFC Bank had reported a
    20 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 2,381.5 crore as compared to Rs
    1,982.32 crore.

    However, this was the fifth consecutive quarter the private sector
    bank posted a sub-30 per cent increase in quarterly profits. For 37
    straight quarters, the bank had posted at least 30 per cent profit
    growth.
