  • 10th anniversary of Tsunami being observed today
    • On this day in 2004, more than 230,000 people were killed due to this natural calamity.
    • With a magnitude of Mw 9.1–9.3, it is the third-largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph.
    • It had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. 
    • It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska.  
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today invited all Indian diaspora to attend the ‘13th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas’ which is going to be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat on 7th to 9th January, 2015.
    • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated every year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India.
    • The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa on January 9, 1915.
    • This (13th) Pravasi Bhartiya Divas marks the completion of 100 years of Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa.
  • 17 Delhi families who lost members in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots today received five lakh rupee cheques from Home Minister Rajnath Singh in a move that the BJP's critics say is linked to polls in the capital early next year.
  • The much awaited helpline for tourists and 'Welcome Card' for foreign visitors was launched by the Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma today.
    • The bi-lingual helpline number 1800-111-363 was made operational by Tourism Ministry as part of Good Governance Day celebrations.
    • A tourist (domestic/foreigner) can call the number from anywhere now if he or she wants to lodge any complaint or know about any particular tourism site, said the official. 
  •  The Karnataka State Government is all set to declare 1,000 villages 'open defecation free' on January 26, said Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister, H.K. Patil today.
New Govt Schemes
  • The Union Health & Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda on 'Good Governance Day' has launched a new scheme, 'Mission Indradhanush' that aims to cover all un-vaccinated or partially vaccinated children by the year 2020, against seven vaccine preventable diseases.
    • The diseases that come under the mission are diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, tuberculosis, measles and hepatitis B.
