International Affairs

• Islamic State Gunman takes several people hostage in a cafe at Sydney, Australia.
• The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and its coalition partner, Komeito, won Japan's parliamentary election on Sunday.
• The governing parties took 325 seats, or more than a two-thirds majority in the 475-seat Lower House, allowing the ruling bloc to set the agenda.

National Affairs

• Nation pays homage to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 63rd death anniversary.
• He was the first home minister and deputy prime minister of India.
• Only due to him India could save the rest of the territories when he successfully accessed 500 princely states to Bharat. (4 photos)
• India celebrates his birthday (31st October 2014) as "National Unity Day".
• Indian Government has agreed in principle to set up a National Research Centre on tribal issues in Odisha.
• All national level research studies and seminars on the subject are to be organised at the proposed centre.
• LokSabha today passed the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Amendment Bill, 2014 by voice vote. 
• The Bill seeks to deal with the problem of eviction from public premises including the buildings of government companies, municipal corporations and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in a more expeditious manner.

• Miss South Africa, 22-year-old Rolene Strauss, was crowned Miss World 2014 at the contest's glitzy final in London

Deaths

• Noted Telugu music composer and singer Chakradhar Gilla (Chakri) passed away after suffering a massive heart attack. He was 40.
• In an illustrious career that spanned over 85 films, Chakri churned out many hit albums and even won the prestigious Filmfare (Satyam) and Nandi awards (Simha).

Science & Technology

• The maiden experimental launch of India's latest Generation launch vehicle GSLV Mk-III has been scheduled for 18th December at 09.00 AM from Sathish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, 100 kms away from Chennai.
• The experimental mission of GSLVMkIII will carry the 'Crew module Atmospheric Re-entry Experiment (CARE)' on a suborbital mission.

• Viswanathan Anand beats Michael Adams to win London Classic title
