International Affairs
  • 18th SAARC Summit begins in Kathmandu today
    • India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka to participate
    • India says, its vision for SAARC rests on five pillars of trade, investment, assistance, cooperation and contacts between the people.
    • PM Narendra Modi holds structured meetings with Heads of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Maldives.
    • Pakistan stalled the inking of SAARC connectivity agreements, including motor vehicle pact, saying it was yet to complete its “internal process”, notwithstanding other countries, including India and Sri Lanka, who have been strongly pitching for strengthening the people-to-people contact and movement of goods in the region.
  • India will soon set up a smart fencing mechanism along Pakistan and Bangladesh Border, BSF Director General DK Pathak said today.
    • This is as part of an over 4,500-crore rupees modernization plan being implemented by Border Security Force to plug loopholes in the porous and unfenced borders along Pakistan and Bangladesh.

  • Lok Sabha passes amendment Bill on appointment of CBI Chief.
  • Victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy have filed an appeal in a higher court in US contesting the decision of a lower court there that Union Carbide Corporation can not be sued for the ongoing contamination from the chemical plant.
    • The appeal has been filed in the US Court of Appeals by the survivors and members of the surrounding community near the plant site in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh for toxic contamination, along with the property owners whose wells have been fouled by toxins from the plant.
  • Reversing the previous Bhupinder Singh Hooda government’s decision, the Haryana Cabinet today reduced the retirement age of government employees from 60 to 58 years.
  • Delhi government has set up a control room and helpline in the city for internal monitoring of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and to provide information about the disease to the public.

Science & Technology
  • Coast Guard today launched Offshore Patrol Vessel named Samar at the Goa Shipyard.
    • It is the first of the series of six OPVs to be designed and built by the shipyard for the Coast Guard.
    • Speaking on the occasion Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal, Director General Coast Guard said that many serious measures including gap filling of the radar cover on the west coast have been initiated for the coastal security and safeguarding our maritime domain since the lessons learnt from the ghastly events of 26/11 in Mumbai.
  • The world's second tallest power transmission towers, built by Haldia Energy Limited (HEL), has come up in West Bengal.
    • The 236-metre-long twin towers, located at HEL's 600-MW capacity plant at Haldia and Raichak across the river Hooghly, are the tallest in the country.
    • The world's highest transmission tower (370 metres) is located at Mount Damaoshan in China.

  • Inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) into India have increased significantly in the current fiscal and the trend will continue in the coming quarters on account the country's pro-growth policy agenda, says a Moody's report.

  5. 45% of a number is less than its 64%by 38.what is 20% of that number? pls tell the answer.
