National Affairs
  • The government today launched the 'Swachh Bharat Kosh', a fund that will be utilized to build toilets in schools, rural and urban areas to achieve the objective of cleanliness across the country
  • The Rajya Sabha has passed labour law amendment bill to bring about transparency in recruitment process.
  • Draft Bill for amending the Citizenship (Amendment) Act is expected to be brought to the Cabinet for approval soon.
    • The Bill will enable merger of the Person of Indian Origin, PIO and Overseas Citizenship of India, OCI schemes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made a number of announcements for PIOs and OCIs recently.
    • In another major initiative, Visa-on-Arrival and Electronic Travel Authorization will be launched in respect of 43 countries on Thursday.
  • Defying separatists’ election boycott call and braving cold weather, voters turned out in large numbers today to record over 70 per cent polling without any incident in 15 constituencies in the first of the five-phase polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The Union Health Ministry has accepted the proposal to prohibit the sale of loose or single stick of cigarette and increase the minimum legal age for sale of tobacco products, Union Health Minister JP Nadda informed the Rajya Sabha today.
    • The proposal mooted by an expert committee set up by the Ministry has also recommended increasing the fine or penalty amounts for violations of certain provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 (COTPA), as well as making such offences cognizable.

    • In an initiative which will deepen the relations between India and Nepal, Modi and his Nepalese counterpart Sushil Koirala flagged-off the Kathmandu-Delhi bus service called Pashupatinath Express 
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart Sushil Koirala  signed a pact on $ 1 billion assistance to Nepal.
    • India and Nepal agree on twin-city pacts between Kathmandu-Varanasi, Janakpur-Ayodhya and Lumbini-Bodh Gaya
    • India, Nepal sign motor vehicle agreement under which permit would be given to vehicles to ply on designated routes in each other's country
    • Showing India’s commitment to strengthening ties, Modi handed over the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mark III Dhruv,  which will be used for military operations to Nepal
    •  "This will add to Nepal's shield of protection," Modi said.

  • India is expected to save at least Rs 86,000 crore annually after electronic toll collection (ETC) system becomes operational pan-India by December, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari today said.
