International Affairs
  • Today (29th October 2014) is World Stroke Day.
    • This day is observed to underscore the serious nature and high rates of stroke, raise awareness of the prevention and treatment of the condition, and ensure better care and support for survivors.
National Affairs
  • The central government submitted the names of all illegal foreign bank account holders to the Supreme Court today.
    • Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi filed set of three documents to apex court in a sealed cover.
    • The documents include 627 names and status report of their investigation in these cases.
    • Court refuses to open the sealed envelope and asked SIT to submit status report by November-end.
    • The Income Tax department is likely to initiate prosecution against close to 300 people whose names have been submitted to the Supreme Court today in connection with the probe into alleged black money accounts in HSBC Bank in Geneva.
    • Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that the deadline for investigation under the Income Tax Act into these accounts is March 31, 2015.
    • Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley asked the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) not to sensationalise its findings to get into headlines, a view the Congress had voiced in the past after huge notional losses were projected in reports on 2G and coal allocation scams.
  • Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan announces TB-Mission 2020 to eliminate Tuberculosis.
  • The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is planning to launch a job portal in next three months for the differently-abled people.
    • With the help of this, the prsons with disabilities will soon get a government-run online platform to explore job opportunities in various companies.

New Govt Schemes
  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated ‘Health Services Guarantee Scheme’ today.
    • This scheme will provide 18 health services as guarantee from today.
    • These 18 health services including free health examination, free distribution of medicines and food in government hospitals and full vaccination of children have been included in the Health Services Guarantee Scheme.

  • Education rights activist Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate in history, won the World’s Children’s Prize, after a global vote involving millions of children.
Sports
  • FIFA President Sepp Blatter has revealed the 2018 World Cup logo.
    • The logo depicts the World Cup trophy in red and blue, colors from the Russian flag, with a gold trim.
    • Russian Sports Minister Vitaliy Mutko said that the logo was inspired by "Russia's rich artistic tradition and its history of bold achievement and innovation"
    • This will be the 21st FIFA World Cup
    • This will be the first World Cup held in the former Soviet Union.

Business & Economy
  • In a boost to cash-starved real estate industry, government today relaxed rules for FDI in the construction sector by reducing minimum built-up area as well as capital requirement and easing the exit norms.
    • Allowed 100 per cent investment under automatic route.
  • The government today raised the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat by a nominal Rs 50 to 1,450 a quintal to encourage farmers to cover more area under the crop in the ongoing rabi season. 
  • South Korean President Park Geun-hye warned the economy is at risk of falling into long-term stagnation and urged for speedier handling of economic law bills in parliament.
  • State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has edged past Reliance Industries to become the highest ranked Indian energy firm on this year’s Platts Global 250 Rankings.
    • ONGC, which in 2013 was ranked 22nd, improved one position in this year’s ranking that is led by global giants Exxon Mobil Corp, Chevron and Royal Dutch Shell.
  • Indian conglomerate Adani today named Parsons Brinckerhoff as its project management contractor for the USD 15 billion Carmichael mine, rail and port project in Australia.
  • India ranked 142 among the 189 countries surveyed for the latest World Bank's "Ease of Doing Business" report released today, a drop by two places from the last year's ranking
