Today’s (03-08-14) RBI Grade B officer’s exam review

Hi Friends, This is Santosh. First of all I congratulate those people who wrote this exam better than their competitors. Before preparing for a competitive exam we should tune our mindset to that particular exam, otherwise the question paper will appear in “Russian language” (Alien language).

Prologue
I can say that I have both sweet and bitter experiences with this exam. Before entering into the very review I want to make you people know one thing i.e. Today’s exam is like ‘bitter pill’ we can’t swallow it at the same time it inevitable for us to do that! I am going to write only the pattern of the exam and few words about difficulty level, as I could not remember more than 10 questions.
Ok As I have given a strategy in our blog! According to that only I have prepared and went to the exam .But Fate played a game with me, so that I went to the examination centre 2.10 PM against the scheduled time 1.30 PM, but RBI is so virtuous and gave me an opportunity to write exam. Had they not allowed me I would have hurt a lot (because as a general category I have paid 850/- for exam).

Main content
*I started with English but here I got first punch, “except closet test” the English paper is not so easy hardly I answered 21/30 questions, even 2 or 3 questions vanish, I will survive in English. RBI has come up with new type of Fill in the blanks, where we will be given 3 alternatives and need to fix them in two blanks(6 questions were given ),so tough all are look like similar and technically most nearer to one another, yet there is slight difference and we need to find it out. Antonym synonym type questions were asked in passage itself. As I said earlier in our strategy the passage is also tough but with concentrated reading we can answer those questions. Overall English will be tough for amateur competitor and moderate for prepared person like me. And cut off will be 9 or 10/30.

*Then I move to General awareness and it is so easy and thought like I was in some ‘clerical cadre’ exam. I think RBI deliberately given it easily as they can test these “General awareness skill” in Mains exam also. So I have answered 68/80 questions correct and left, as the remaining questions also easy but mere facts one serious RBI/Civil services aspirant cannot answer them (because in these types of exams our preference normally would be on concepts rather facts). I will give some questions for your idea
  • What is Narendra modi’s first bilateral tour – Bhutan
  • Finance minister name- Arun jaitley
  • In the first tour who have accompanied with Modi- sushma jee
  • Who is ENT specialist in Modi’s cabinet –Harsha vardhan
Like all Modi’s mantra, why they asked all these questions as they may not give any donut. In fact they would have asked what agreements Modi made with Bhutan.

And the toughest question I found in General awareness section is “question on negotiable instruments like Banks notes, Cheques etc. will be valid under the purview of negotiable instruments act” but Banks and other financial intermediaries were given teeth with which act- Sarfaisi act-2002.

Like this General awareness is dead easy for prepared one and moderate for non serious candidate.
And later I moved to Reasoning because I thought I can manage “Quantitative aptitude” but it was also betrayed me like “English section”. So reasoning is little easy because except 1 puzzle and Input-output, remaining is a cakewalk for aspirant. All expected and discussed models in the strategy have come. And I have answered 42/60 and left but here I am sure I will lose 4 or 5 questions. Codes in sentences like (bi la ti ze is code for I am good student like questions) is a good type and here RBI gave 10 questions based on this logic and we can easily solve them. And syllogism is dead easy, finally inference- argument, courses of action are also good and not time consuming. But what I understand about puzzle is even we practice 99 models he will give 100th model, as there is no particular parameters for Puzzle. Spot solving skills are important. Being a serious candidate I could not answer reasoning up to my expectations, and the reason I will say in the epilogue.

Finally I come to “Quant” and I was left with 25 min. Time, I could easily answer if this part was good, but RBI gave “corrections in number series” for 8 marks and all are twisters, I leave all those 8 as my mind was not hearing my words anymore. And then I move to small Geometry sums and I finished them with good accuracy. As I said in the strategy RBI come up with ‘two equations quadratic expressions and asking X>y, X>=Y etc. but I have solved them in less time and go to “Data interpretation”, I would not have done this so., because it is quite time consuming and I could answer 2/6 questions. Finally I answered 18/30 in stipulated time. Finally I can say that never ever under estimate “Quant”, because it makes you “Most wanted”.

So my attempts are English: 21/30, General awareness: 68/80, Reasoning: 42/60, Quant: 18/30

Total attempts: 149 and if we depreciate even 10 questions 139 marks.

And I am estimating cutoff will be 125(+/- 5).

Epilogue
I can finally say today I have good bitter experience in the exam hall also besides my “late appeal”.  And that is “My allotted system have severe virus” and it was frequently harassed me in the mean time. And it took 6 sec as response time to move to different question. I asked the room coordinator to change the system but that person was half knowledge one and asked me to wait by the time one of the officials have come. Later he allotted me another system meanwhile I lost so much valuable time and got huge frustration in the exam. So anytime in the exam we should request--> ask--> even fight with room coordinators to get perfect system. It is our right we should have it.

Finally friends I can say one thing that “I have learnt several lesions from my experience today”. But if we may learn lesson from our own experience all time, then our life may not be enough to learn everything. So I hope you got good lesson from my experience.

Thank you Friends: Santosh kumar Perali(Hyderabad)

    1. Friend,If you feel this is easier than clerk's exam then your preparation level is excellent in the topics of Quantitative aptitude and reasoning. I personally feel "General awareness" only in clerk's standard.

    2. santosh,
i am inclined to agree with you as far as the GK is concerned, it was a walk in the park, unexpectedly easy and did not know RBI wanted people interested in Bobby jassos, there was a question regarding the same!!

  5. Very Helpful.
    as usual my very naive question;
from where did you read General Awareness?
If this blog is enough or anything more we need?
Share this, as it is the most disturbing part of my preparation yet.

    1. As far the General Awareness is concerned, this blog is very good source with good and relevant material. I suggest you to read "Economic Times" or "The Hindu Business" for more grip on Economy.

    2. Friend I am preparing for Civil services, so basically i have some grip on Economy related Concepts, and i prefer you to read some online blogs besides this one for current affairs, but it depends on your requirement,If you wan to go for some depth in Economy and other related current affairs then dig the internet for different blogs, but want good and lucid explanation in brief then stay here, even i am planing to write articles on regular basis and will be helpful to you like guys.Thank you.

    1. I prepared for all arithmetic topics in similar way, and i have some private material which have short cuts for boats, trains, profit and loss, partnership sums, by those formulas we can solve questions in less than a minute and for some questions even 40-50 sec.But for that you should practice a lot.

  8. Hi Santhosh,

Please suggest me that if coaching class would help to clear the upcoming bank exam?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dear friend now or never i will say "go for coaching". Because Nowadays these coaching centers are doing business like anything. We are investing our time in return what we are getting??? But one thing is sure, If you go to coaching now, then those learned concepts(even half filled) will roam in your mind up to 10-15 days, but without practice they will be vanished soon. So I won't prefer you to go to coaching instead take some good book like "Kiran publication etc." and practice it by fixing some time. And once you prepare time table you should stick for it at any cost.then I am sure you will come up with flying colors.

  9. Plz give the study plan for SIDBI as Asst. Manager to b hel on sept 2014.....

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dear Alok, I know little about SIDBI exam ,and it is also just like an ordinary bank exam, don't expect more from this,so prepare according to syllabus, and since posts are very low i.e. 80 only you should work hard to be in the competition. Now scenario is just like "bullying for job",so we should be like "competitive bellicose".But job with SIDBI will be good compared to IBPS,becuase SIDBI is one of the four all India financial institutions such as EXIM,NABARD,NHB,SIDBI so if you get job there you are lucky.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Friend Results will be published in 20-25 days like last year, but despite results we should start our preparation from tomorrow on wards,as there is no sufficient time(probably in oct fist week we will have phase II) so plan for that. just go to RBI site where you can dig the syllabus, and you ahouls be very particular about syllabus as far as mains concerned. All the best

  12. My total attempt was 138 but worried about english as i could attempt only 16 question otherwise i am confident that i will clear prelim Exam.... RA: 34, Eng: 16, Quant: 16, GA: 72.....
Hi Santosh....kindly share from where you study current affair online for Civil services.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dear friend congrats that you attempted 138,I am sure English cutoff will be low like even single digit, this is because even closet test also not easy if we carefully read it(I hope Britain unemployment issue was given, there he confused us like anything) but fact is those who can get more than 130 surely get selected. I also made good attempts in all sections as i said above, but still iam unhappy with my performance in Quant paper(all hurry burry i did),ok I am slowly deleting those memories from my mind,Anyway I am used to prepare several blogs such as "Halfmantr","General awareness for bank exams" etc. even I have JTS institute material besides CSAT manuals(but whatever we have is not matter, whatever we grasp is all about),all the best.

  14. friends... today i attended for rbi gradeb exam and here is the review..
Exam was moderate .. gk 80 questions.. mostly came from current affairs from march to july.. and u can attempt easily if u read paper daily.. funny thing is that questions like who is hero of kochiyadin mve, like that...no need to worry abt this section.. english. 30 questions. . little bit tricky.. a new section appeared like they gave 2 sentences and asked us to join those sentences and gave some startter line.. clozet test, comprehension and thats all english
maths very tough actually... but if u attempted more than 13 it will be fine.. and reasoning at sbi po level.. gave 60 from reasoning...finally.. its not so easy and not so difficult.. ..

    1. Good friend, and for you this is the best time because you have time up to October so prepare according to syllabus by putting time table.*Daily you should read daily current affairs from our blog or something elsewhere and i prefer you to write them down in your own language. and then give equal importance to all different topics you have.*General awareness for banks" is a blog and go and dig it from recent post to the oldest,in that blog they are providing even factual info. for events, and then for English i suggest you to buy "Objective English by SP Bakshi, arihant publications".and finally be updated with Gr8 ambitionz, as this blog have enormous legacy for its selfless service to us like aspirants. All the best

  21. Hi Santosh Sir,

My SBI PO is scheduled to be held on 16th Aug. I am facing difficulty in solving syllogism. Please provide me some technique and shortcuts to solve syllogism questions.

    Thanks

    1. Sorry Sir its SBI Clerical.

      Delete
    2. Dear Friend first i would like to say all the best for your exam on 16th. Syllogism is easier than many other reasoning sums provided you should do little practice.Even in our blog also there were some 'syllogism' related articles,go through them. But I suggest you to avoid one of the two models of problem solving in syllogism i.e. "Aristotle method",which is often cumbersome,so just go for "Venn diagram method", most of the problems we can solve with Venn diagram method(except two methods which are 'all trees are lakes is being a possibility' like types are 'not some lakes are oceans' like questions, so just go through "you tube videos" where some reputed coaching class videos will be there, you can learn a lot, but preparation is must for reasoning, all the best friend.

    thanx in advance

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For exam pattern you may download previous papers and analyze the things. You may try to write answers on your own for them and cross check with the facts and make comprehensive answer like that you can prepare for it.But as far as i observed RBI mains exam, papers are having more or less same questions or concept repetition over the years. So gather them by digging web and practice them.

    1. Dear friend,Once you submitted your application there ends the "editing" matter. So as far as i know you cannot modify the existing application. But as you said you tick wrong preferences!, all banks under IBPS offers more or less same salaries and perks/incentives so no need to get panic over this issue. Even if you tick "Vijaya" bank as first option don't bother about it.You will definitely placed in any bank you want provided you must get high score than your competitors. So that's all friend, all the best

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dear friend,i said amicable cutoff, as i told by somebody that this RBI exam is not like SBI PO exam, where D.I is tough for all students which was happened on several days over a few weeks earlier,so they may/may not consider the relative toughness of different sessions, and finally i said my prediction over cutoff, frankly speaking my intention is not demoralizing people by predicting cutoffs, but irrespective of cutoffs we should prepare for II phase exam,if not this year we will write them next year, but anyhow we may write it.

As this was my first attempt to these type of exams. It was really awesome experience with your guys.
All the concepts tought very nicely with examples. It hekped me to update my economics knowledge too.

Overall Review Summary: As per the analysis from Last years Exams this was toughest in all for sure :(
    My Attempts:
1)GK-57 (with 80-90 % accuracy) Daily reading and Forums can be sufficient to this section
2)Eng-22(60-75% acc) Collection of Vocabulary needed
3)Quant: 10(80-90% acc) This was my strong part be4 appearing but now thinking of its weak point. Very tough …Unexpected sections came and especially DI too tough and time consuming lost 5+ minutes without attempting any questions in some parts…
4)Reasoning: 26(90% acc) Medium to difficult level….Time consuming questions in seating arrangement, Building floors, etc parts..Lengthy as well…Again dis pointed myself in this section as well
Total attempted: 115….80-85 marks expected which I don’t think are enough to qualify …only some magic can change this complexion :P

Please fill to free comment on any chances about my qualification to next round or any ..:)P
