Banking Exams Preparation Strategy and Tips - Karthikeyan M

Dear Friends, I am Karthik. I am very happy to share that I got allotted as PO in Indian Bank and Clerk in in Canara bank in IBPS III. Here I want to share my preparation strategy and a few tips to all the readers of Gr8AmbitionZ.  I hope it will help all the banking aspirants. Have a nice day.

Name : Karthikeyan M

Education : MBA (Marketing and Finance)

Experience : 4 Years as HR Admin (last 3 yrs in Gulf)

My way of Preparation :

Last June 2013 i resigned my job and returned to settle in India. First thing comes to my mind is Bank exams as i tried to get into during my PG but cant because of lack in preparations while that time.

But as am keen follower of Gr8ambitionz team from 2011 onwards (Still i remember it was in the name Guide4bankexams) so i had an idea about the exam pattern syllabus and everything.

I started my preparations from August 2013 onwards step by step. My approach to each and every section is as follows:

General Awareness:

I have interest in Current affairs because of newspaper reading habit developed during my college days which helped to crack this section easy. Even i was in abroad i used to update current affairs with online newspapers and the current affairs uploaded in Gr8ambitionz team. Reading newspaper helps us to develop our vocabulary too.

Banking Knowledge:

Very Interesting section, score well by reading basic knowledge in banking industry and business columns in Hindu, Business line to update the recent ones.

Computer Knowledge:

To be frank, i have not prepared any thing more than the capsule loaded by this team for this section. Even i didnt gone through it fully. As most of the questions will come from basics, so working knowledge in computer is sufficient to answer. But very important thing is, this is one of the scoring areas at very less time. So speed and accuracy by picking the right option is important which can be attained only through keen practice.

English

Everyone is good in spoken english. But it wont work out in Competitive exams. We don't follow any rules in oral communication but in formal we should. In exams they will test our ability how much proficiency we have in english by Comprehension test (Grasping power and vocabulary), Error spotting (basic grammar rules), Cloze test (vocabulary), re arrangement of sentences.

I realised and understand there is no shortcut for this section but practice. Started to solve with the previous test papers in a time frame. First i mark the right answers using key and will go through it for 5 sets. After then used to solve. It will give motivation as many of the answers we marked will be right and slowly transferred to solve directly. Please make a try like this, so you can realise you will score much marks in these section.

Many leave Comprehension reading by thinking it is time consuming one but it not so. In Comprehension reading, first read the whole comprehension a glance without stopping till the end. Before reading you can read the questions without seeing the options which will make you alert those lines come while reading the whole comprehension. If you do so, you can score more than 90% of questions right in these section within a time frame of 5 to 8 mins. Reading speed will increase only through keen practice.

Reasoning:

Real time consuming section only for the beginners. Various topics like sitting arrangements, Input output, Directions, Mathematical Operations, Syllogisms, etc are there. It depends on the approach how you choose the questions with in a time frame to solve.

I have seen in many exams Sitting arrangements or any puzzle will comes in the beginning. Its a trap to arrest our time. We can understand by reading the question itself whether it will take more time to solve or not. If feel not, wise decision is to move other questions like Syllogisms, Input output, mathematical operations, directions etc, where we can mark right answers confidently within a less time. So, with in the allotted time of 30 mins we can mark up to 25 questions in these sections itself which is sufficient to score good marks in these section.

Aptitude Test :

At last come to the interesting area of the test. Practice makes Man perfect, likewise Solving more papers makes Speeder in maths. No space for assumption answers for here. Numbers, DI plays crucial role to score require marks. More important i allot more time for this section only and comes at last. Many videos for shortcuts are available in you tube. Please watch and try to apply those in the practice papers. Even those short cuts has the same rule "Practice" .

Fine, Here my time allocation:

General awareness and Banking knowledge: 10 mins
Computer proficiency: 10 Mins
English :  20 - 25 Mins Max
Reasoning: 30 - 35 Mins Max
Aptitude - Minimum 35 Mins

Time allocation is very mandatory and should follow strictly in each sections. It can obtained only by practicing the same in taking full tests. My one suggestion is don come to english section at the last as your mind wont allow to sit in reading comprehension because of tiredness.

Bank Exams appeared and Outcome :

  1. July 2013 - KVB Clerk - Written not cleared
  2. July 2013 - RBI Assistant - Written not cleared
  3. September 2013 - IOB PO - Written not cleared
  4. September 2013 - NICL AO - Written not cleared
  5. September 2013 - KVB PO - Cleared both Written and Interview
  6. September 2013 - IBPS RRB PO - Cleared Written with 120 Marks and waiting for interview at Pandyan Grama bank
  7. October 2013 - IBPS PO - Cleared with overall marks 42.2 and got alloted to INDIAN Bank
  8. November 2013 - IBPS Clerk - Cleared with overall marks 65.60 and got alloted to CANARA Bank.

Now having 3 offers in hand and one final interview is pending. Many questioned me, its not wise decision to resign my job and came back for bank preparation before my results. Those pains faced in the society being jobless will fly as soon as getting into job.

Nothing is impossible in this world. If we can't then who can. Many govt employees sitting in higher positions was unemployed or an executive in private companies before appearing for competitive exams. Keen focus, determination and dedication helps everyone to reach the goal.

So, don't give up. Schedule a plan, get a practice workbook or download from net and start practicing till reach your goal. "JOB IS OURS"

I sincerely thank Ms. Shivani and Gr8ambitionz team for their wonderful service as i got many of the above inputs from here only. It's an unbeatable service and even they clarify our doubts if any as soon as possible in their posts.

I thank them once again and wish all aspirants success in the future endeavors.

  75. Hi Karthik , I had one doubt regarding the educational qualification, is only MBA or Computer science students are eligible for banking post?, y am asking is during interview they are always asking like how your dept will help in banking...if we r science student ....please clear my doubt., because of this my interest is getting down.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, Any degree is eligible for Banking jobs.....(PO and Clerical), Nowadays all of us are educated with computer and well known how to operate applications which is sufficient. In interview its a common quest to non commerce students to test how they co relate their education towards banking...
      '
Am UG in Textile Tech, if i face tat question, "i ll say many textile business are there, so if any related loan application comes i ll assess it easily.... " like wise.... so don think only CS n MBA students are eligible, one of my friend is BA Eng litt got alloted to Clerical job in canara bank this time.
