  • Governor Earl Ray Tomblin of West Virginia announced  that the ban on tap water for parts of West Virginia was lifted, ending a crisis for a fraction of the 300,000 people who were told not to drink, wash or cook with water after a chemical spill tainted the water supply.
  • Energy-related carbon dioxide pollution grew by 2% last year after declining several years in a row, a US government report announced.
  • The United States criticized Nigeria for approving a law that punishes same-sex marriage with prison, saying the move would curtail basic human rights.
  • Expressing concern over Chinese hypersonic cruise missile test, top American lawmakers have said the Asia-Pacific region is fast becoming a powder keg.
  • U.S. President Barack Obama has said that the landmark nuclear deal reached between the P5+1 countries and Iran offers extraordinary opportunities for the later and its people.
  • The Chinese government has directed its armed forces to choose domestic brand cars while procuring military vehicles as part of its austerity drive.

National Affairs
  • Two major harvest festivals, Makar Sankranti and Pongal were being celebrated across the country on Tuesday.
  • Eid-E-Milad was being celebrated throughout the country.
  • The much-awaited Rs 40-crore solid waste management project (SWMP) in Berhampur town in South Odisha will be implemented soon in public private partnership (PPP) mode.
  • The average life expectancy of people in the country has increased by 5 years since 2004 due to consistent investments in public health sector by the government. The Prime Minister Office in a tweet said that life expectancy has gone up from 63.9 years in 2004 to 69.6 years in 2014.
  • The arrival of winged visitors to Chilika Lake, the biggest waterfowl habitat in the country, has dropped this season with 1.58 lakh fewer migratory birds sighted than the previous season.
  • Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone of the 2800 Megawatt Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (Nuclear Power Project) in Gorakhpur village of Fatehabad District of Haryana.
  • Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claimed nearly 10 lakh people have joined it in 4 days of its ongoing membership drive.
  • Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will take part in a meeting of women's representatives from various sections to be organised by All-India Mahila Congress in Bhopal on January 20 as a part of preparation of party's manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections.

Business and Economy
  • In a bid to attract more global oil majors, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has proposed exemption from royalty payment and an income-tax holiday of up to 10 years for the next round of auction of oil and gas exploration blocks.
  • State-owned Coal India Ltd declared an interim dividend of Rs 29 per share amounting to Rs 18,317 crore, or a record 290 per cent, for 2013-14, helping the Centre garner about Rs 16,485 crore.
