Friends, in our last post we have discussed about the objectives of HRM (Human Resource Management). Today we shall discuss about the Activities of HR. All managers with HR responsibility must consider the external environmental forces - legal, political, economic, social cultural and technological and internal environment - Mission, culture, size, organization, operations etc. Below are the major activities of HR,
  1. HR Planning and Analysis
  2. Equal Employment Opportunity
  3. Staffing
  4. HR Development
  5. Compensation and Benefits
  6. Health, Safety, Security
  7. Employee / Management Relations
Now lets have a detailed look at the above mentioned HR Activities.
  1. HR Planning and Analysis : Through HR Planning, HR managers attempt to anticipate forces that will influence the future supply of and demand for employee. Adequate HR information system is crucial for HR planning. As part of organizational competitiveness, analysis and assessment of HR acgtivities must take place. 
  2. Equal Employment Opportunity : Compliance with legal provisions, diversity of individuals, awareness of Equal Employment Opportunities (EEO) while selection, training are essential for HR Manager.
  3. Staffing : The aim of staffing is provide an adequate supply of qualified employees to fill the jobs. For this the HR manager must be ready with job analysis before going for recruitment and selection.
  4. HR Development : Beginning with the orientation of new employees HR development also includes Job skill training. Retraining becomes necessary to suit technological changes. Development of employees, supervisors, managers is essential to face future challenges. Career planning is the path for growth whereas performance management helps in assessing how the employees perform their jobs.
  5. Compensation and Benefits : Compensation rewards people for performing organizational work through policy, incentives and benefits. Incentive schemes help in motivational aspects.
  6. Health, Safety, Security : Ensuring the physical and mental health and safety of employees is vital, and form an important role for HR manager.
  7. Employee / Management Relations : The relationship between managers and their employees must be handled efficiently / effectively if both the organization and employees have to prosper simultaneously. It is important to develop, communicate and update HR policies and procedures so that managers and employees alike know what is expected.
