INTERNATIONAL EVENTS

  • Software giant Microsoft today said it will acquire Finnish handset maker Nokia's handset business for 5.44 billion euros (USD 7.17 billion) in cash, in an effort to strengthen its position in the smartphone market.
  • Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) today launched its new compact car 'Grand i10' priced between Rs 4.29 lakh and Rs 6.41 lakh as it looks to enhance its position in the country.


ECONOMY
  • Internationally renowned economist Raghuram Rajan will take over as RBI Governor tomorrow and plunge straight into a fire-fight situation as the country battles a rapid fall in rupee, high inflation, low growth and burgeoning current account deficit (CAD).
  • The Indian rupee dropped sharply below 68 against the US dollar on persistent demand from banks and importers on the back of a firm American currency overseas amidst sudden fall in equity markets.
  • Farmers, who have innovated agri-technologies, should register with state-run research body ICAR so as to promote widespread use of such technologies across the country and improve production.

SPORTS
  • Master batsman Sachin Tendulkar has been selected for a special ‘Century of Centuries Award’ by the Sports Journalists’ Association of Mumbai (SJAM).
